STRATFORD HANDICAPS

(Per United Press Association) PALMERSTON -*., Dec. 18. Following are the handicaps for the first day of the Stratford meeting, January 2:—

WAIRARAPA HANDICAPS (Per United Press association* •WELLINGTON, Dec. 18. Following are the handicaps for the first day of the Wairarapa meeting, December 26: FEATHERSTON HANDICAP, » Of £2OO. Six furlongs.

NORTHERN MEETINGS STRONG RICCARTON TEAM (Special ro Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 17. For several years past there have been some horses from Riccarton at the Manawatu Racing Club's summer meeting, after which some have wound up at Wairarapa, while others have done Marlon or Stratford This will be the programme this season for horses from several stables. They will go north on Monday night. For several seasons H. and A Cutts have sent n team to Manawatu and Wairarapa This year A Cutts will take three horses with excellent prospects. Wild Chase, the star of the party is top-weight in the Manawatu Cup He has his full share of weight, and will require to be at his best to beat some of those lower down the Oaks winner, Peerless, beinp one that seems well treated at 7.8 Al the same time, it has to be recalled lha* Wild Chase was a top-class three-year-old, and though he lost form last season, his recent running is evidence that he is on the way to good deeds again, If all goes well with him, he looks certain to pay his way on the trip.

Counterblast, the sprinter of the party, won at Trentham and then ran third in the Stewards' Handicap. On this form she looks like paying her way, though she will meet stout opposition at Awapuni. Laughing Lass is one to be Kept in mind, while riorence Mills, now in receipt of lltb, Deat Counterblast when receiving only sib on the first day at Trentham. This was in a hack -race, after which the Riccarton mare won in open company. The third member of the uhtiord team is ureat might, a promising hack, with recent track torm to suggest that she is on'the way to better deeds. A. G. Parsons will accompany this team as the rider. C. C. McCarthy may have four in his team, or only tnree, depending on the final decision about Argentic. If he misses Auckland, he may get some money at Awapuni and Stratford or Wairarapa, as his recent track form has been good. Rabble is an improver, requiring only average luck to pay his way. The three-year-old Improvident, may never be more than moderate, as he lacks stamina, but his speed will help him in some of-his five furlong engagements. He and Rabble are due to wind up at Stratford or Wairarapa. Haughty Winner, the remaining member of the team, will finish the trip at the Wairarapa meeting, where his -Wellington owner will have a chance to see him race. He is very well, and there are not many Riccarton horses with better holiday prospects. J. Campbell will have two horses in his care. Lady Rosette did not race up to expectations at Riccarton, but her form before then and again later, was attractive. She can stay, and there are hack races at Manawatu and Wairarapa to give her a great chance. Her mate, Night Hawk, has developed wayward habits on the track, but is a good galloper up to a mile, and should pay his way. F A. Roberts has Phalanx in good order, and his owner (Mr D. Spence) may have a successful trip with this hack. Some of his failures early in the season were expensive, but he has made steady improvement, and he is at his best now. INVERCARGILL TRACK WORK DUNEDIN HORSES WORK WELL MONA'S SONG AND MILFORD PLEASE (Special to Dailv Times) INVERCARGILL, Dec. 17. More than ordinary interest was shown in the track work at Invercargill this morning when a good amount of useful work was accomplished. The weather was fine and the track in good order. Before breakfast the poles on the course proper were 35,. feet out, while those galloping after the interval were 24ft out. Several good gallops by Dunedin candidates added interest to the proceedings. Before breakfast, Ashaway jumped off at the seven-furlorig peg and was picked up by a Full Feather—Thessaly mare at the half-mile. Ashaway ran the first two in 26 l-ssec. three in 39 3-ssec. and the journey in Imm 35 2-ssec. The last half-mile was run in 55 4-ssec. Ashaway was stopping at the finish, and the Full Feather mare, who is a good type of galloper, was held back to him. Moonraider and Dinty sprinted over half a mile in 52 2-ssec, the first two furlongs in 24 2-ssec. They finished together and, in comparison with later gallops, when the poles were moved in, this was a particularly good effort.. After the breakfast interval Baltruin beat Brilliant Boa by half a length over seven furlongs in lmin 33sec, the first two in 25 2-ssec, three m 38 4-ssec, five in lmin 33sec, and the last half in 55 4-ssec. Baltruin, who looks really well, was under a good hold at the finish and could have done better had he been required to. Brilliant Boa also shaped well. Royal Vane and King's Chorus finished together over ,half a mile in 53sec. Royal Vane is the name under which the four-year-old gelding by Weathervane from Panroyal in F. W. Ellis's stable will race. ~ Waitorii and Doubleack were responsible for the best mile of the morning, finishing together in lmin 47 4-ssec. The first half-mile was run in 54 l-ssec, arid the last half in 53 3-ssec. Both were doing their work comfortably at the finish. Sea Lady beat Ocean Singer by three lengths over seven furlongs in lmin 34 3-ssec, the first five in lmin 4 4-ssec, and the last half in 56 3-ssec. Sea Lady opened up a gap of several lengths within the first two furlongs, and considering that she pulled so hard she stayed on well. Astral Flame and Spendthrift were together at the end of five furlongs in lmin 5 l-ssec, the last half in 53 4-ssec. Astral Flame had all the worst of the weights and it was an encouraging effort on his part. Spendthrift is in excellent order. „■•„';. Ardmayle jumped off at .the mile and a-quarter post and was joined by Wild Career at the mile. The first half took 53 2-ssec, the, six in lmin 20sec, the mile in lmin 47 3-ssec, and the full journey in 2min 16 2-ssec. The last mile was run in lmin 49 2-ssec, and the last half in 55 3-ssec. The pair were together at the post. Wild Career being under a good hold and Ardmayle v staying on well. Wild Career had all the worst of the W Astral Light beat Guste by, several lengths over six furlongs In lmin i9sec, the first two in 25sec, three in 39 3-ssec and the last half in 54sec. Astral Light is a very easy galloper and could have done better. Amelita jumped off at the seven and was picked up by Aspire at the five. The full journey was run in lmin 36 3-ssec,'the first three in 44sec and the last half in 52 3-ssec. • The Irish Lancer—Morse Signal two-year-old and the Silk Garter—Moha mare led Bow Street home over half a mile in 53 4-ssec. , On her own, Sailing Lady ran six furlongs in lmin 18 2-ssec, the last half in 53sec. The Lord Warden mare was doing her work quietly right through. _, , , . Astral Flash beat Foxlove and Rompalong over seven furlongs in lmin 34 2-ssec. the first two in 27 3-ssec, three in 40sec. and the last half in 54 2-ssec. Astral Flash put a lot of dash into her work and finished full of running. Foxlove seldom gives his best on the tracks. Western Song galloped a mile in lmin 51sec, the first three in 40sec, and the last half in 58sec. Boswell and Jedburgh were together at the end of seven furlongs in lmin 34 2-ssec, the first two in 27sec and the last half in 54 2-ssec. Boswell had to be shaken up to be with Jedburgh at the finish. The latter has improved greatly in recent weeks. Colonel French ran right away from Blissful Lady over the. last furlong of a five-furlong bout in lmin 7sec. the last half in 54sec. Some interest was shown in a bout between three Otago Handicap candidates, when Milford, Mona's Song, and Ardchoille were matched over a mile. Milford and Mona's Song were to-, aether at the finish, with Ardchoille several lengths back. The first two were run in 27 4-ssec, three in 41sec. the half in 54 l-ssec, and the mile in lmin 48 3-ssec, the last half in 54 2-ssec. Mona's Song was doinf? as well as Milford at the finish, but the fast pace over the first half did not suit Ardchoille. who was conceding the others weight. , . , , Gold Robe ran five furlongs in lmin 2-ssec, the last half in 54sec. Dalrymple beat Royal Huntsman by naif a length at the end of Aye furlongs' in lmin 7sec. the last half in 53 2-ssec Grand Finale, King Willow, and Dazzling Raid set out to jump four hurdles. At the third fence, King Willow ran off and dropped his rider He was sent round again and completed the task safely, jumping well ■right through. Grand Finale gave a sound display, as also did Dazzling Raid who lost ground at one fence down the back. Jennings received a shaking when he fell from King Wil low. and had to receive medical attention. It is understood that he injured the muscles of a hip.
