At Wingatui The long spell of broken weather, mariced by some very heavy showers, has made the going heavy at Wingatui, but a few favourable days would soon restore it to good going. The outside of the course proper was open on Saturday morning, but owing to the state of the going most of the horses were restricted to strong work. Some fast work took place on the plough track, which had a soft surface, but was not deep. • ' The two-year-olds Lin wood and Fancy Phil cantered and then came over a final half-mile at a strong pace. Astaire and New Note left half a mile behind in 58, 4-ssec, with the former doing best at the finish. On the plough track Moneymore and Pretty Model sprinted half a mile in 56 l-ssec. Moneymore finished on the better of the two. , Nightwings went at better than half pace from the front of the stands and picked up Denis Bowling at the fivefurlong post. They finished five furlongs In lmin 17 3-ssec, and the last half-mile in 82 4-ssec. Norseman travelled over seven furlongs in lmin 49sec, the final half-mile in 61 3-ssec. Dunedin Summer Meeting Acceptances are due to-day for the opening card of the Dunedin Jockey Club's summer meeting. Stretto Stretto is galloping'well in her work, and, despite, a load of 9.7, is ejected to shape/well-in the. Railway Handicap.' ;, h ' , ;'_"' .''■ ~ Disdain's Rider • who has been engaged to-ride Disdain in the Railway Handicap, won on Stretto last year. War Admiral War Admiral, the best horse sired by Man o' War, is to join his sire at the Faraway Stud next spring, .says an American exchange. His boolc is already full at 1500 dollars, with 10 per cent, additional to ensure a live foal. In his first season he is being limited to 15 marcs. Man o' War had always been limited to 25 mares in a season.

A New Role R. Inkson, Victoria's crack crosscountry horseman of a few seasons ago, is coming back into the game as a trainer.. Seriously injured in a fall, Inkson gave- UP riding and set up in a motor-garage business at Ascot Vale. The business has prospered, but Inkson feels the call of the tuff, and intends to apply to the V.R.C. for a trainers licence. Special Trains The ' Railways Department has arranged to run special trains in connection with all the holiday meetings and-'a quick and efficient service for each fixture will be available. Master Hotspur ••'-•'. It ■'& reported that' Master' Hotspur bears a bright appearance, but he is being restricted to useful exercise and will not have to race again until the autumn.. After his first effort in the John'Grigg- Stakes at' Ashburton his subsequent form" was disappointing, but there will be plenty of time for him'"to prove that' the form was not his >best. ~-,. \\ A Sensation ' A sensation has been caused in racing circles by the dismissal from the Ceylon Turf Club of Major J. O. Hanwell, the starter, appointed six months ago from the Royal Calcutta Turf Club at a salary of £IOOO a year. The race for the Serpentine Stakes at a recent meeting was a fiasco. Don Caesar, a hot favourite, was left at the post. The jockey followed the field at a walking pace, and a crowd of 30,000 booed the official so that the police had to be called. Revived Memories Memories of the sensational aftermath of Prince Humphrey's success in the A.J.C. Derby of 1928 were recalled when Unafraid (Heroic— Shepherd Princess) won at Canterbury Park (Sydney) recently. Unafaid)» dam figured also as the dam of Prince Humphrey when the latter won the classic, but later it Was discovered that Prince Humphrey and another Duke Humphrey yearling, sent to New Zealand at the same time, had become mixed in transit, and that the Derby winner was actually by Duke Humphrey from Princess Hazel.

The French Invasion Outstanding honours have been won this autumn by French horses on English" racecourses. Especially noteworthy was the- winning of the Cesarewitch by .Contrevent, a colt owned bv the Princess May de Faucigny-Lucinge, whose interest in English racing has increased ever since Rodosto won the English Two Thousand Guineas under her colours in 1933. Second wife of the late Prince

Ferdinand, head of the house of Faucigny-Lucinge, the princess is the daughter of the late Maurice Ephrussi, millionaire banker, and a Rothschild mother. Contrevent's success completed for France the big English autumn double, since the sister race, the Cambridgeshire, was won by M Jacques Meller's Hellenigua against an even greater horse, Khasnadar. Serious interest in the thoroughbred horse in France dates only from 1833, the time of the founding of the Frencn Jockey Club, for while Hugh Capet of France, when courting the sister of King Athelstan, is said to have made a present of some " running horses " to that king, these creatures were expressly stated to be German. In Louis XlV's time, it is true, Colbert did his best to improve the French breed by making good sires available at reasonable prices, but it was in the time of Charles X that his son began really to establish the thoroughbred horse in France, with a stud at Meudon under the Due de Guiche, importing, in 1827. a stallion called Rowlston.

A Busy Period With so many race meetings in the holiday period, there will be a dearth of jockeys at many of the carnivals, and it is possible that several of the better-known- horsemen will be forced to do some rapid travelling. The Manawatu and Auckland meetings will claim the attention of most in the North Island, for it is at these two meetings that the best stakes are provided. One of the busiest riders in, the North Island will be the Ellerslie horseman H. N. Wiggins. He intends being at Awapuni (first day) Ellerslie, and Taranakl (second day). He is already booked for Birthday Boy and Disdain at Auckland, while he is to pilot members of T. R. George's stable at Awapuni. P. Atkins is concentrating, on Auckland and Awapuni. and at Ellerslie he has contracted to ride Courtcraft, Padishah. Beaulivre, Coronation. Gay Son. and one of F. Davis's youngsters in the two-year-old handicap. R. McTavish will Be at both Awapun,i and Ellerslie, and at the former meeting he will be on Eurotas, Darthura, and Colonel Bogey. W. J. Broughtori has contracted to ride Arctic Kmg and members of A. J. Julian's stable at Ellerslie. his Railway Handicap mount being Rollicker. B. H. Morris's two. mounts at Auckland are The Buzzer and possibly Smoke Screen. L. G. Morris's horses will claim his attention at Awapuni. J. Chaplin is remaining at Awapuni, where he will handle Royal Lassie and Race Call. W. Jenkins is to go to Awapuni and Marton, and he is booked for Seyfried, Lady Ina, and. Golden Ridge. P. Burgess has made no definite plans, but at present will probably remain at Awapuni, although there is a possibility of his going, north to ride Te Hero. L. Dulieu is covering the Taranaki meeting over the holiday. J. Mcßae will handle Ngakaru in the hurdle races on the first and second days of the Auckland meeting, and will then go to New Plymouth to ride Glenvane. A Novelty The Greymuutn Trotting Club's meeting will be marked by a novelty in the' way of v match between two straight-out trotters, Peggotty and Sea Gift, two of the best of their gait in commission. A Task Big Author, at his best, with a record or around 4min 19sec, would supply a test for Indianapolis to give him seven seconds in the Canterbury Handicap, and incidentally pass a few on the journey. A Sure Success The fields engaged In the various trotting-events to be decided during the holiday meetings show an abundance of material to form an attractive card. A club's ambition should be to draw the grain from the chaff, and so make the sure success obtainable from the best material. "' Gore A good .card has been secured for the Gore Trotting Club's annual meeting, to be held on Boxing Day. The fields are satisfactory from a numerical point of view, and will supply ample scope for those who wish to bet, . A Matinee Meeting The Timaru Trotting Club held a , second matinee meeting on Saturday, and it would serve to break the long spell between the regular fixtures. A mixed card for maiden pacers, maiden trotters and open pacers was varied by a half-mile sprint for two-year-olds and a six-furlong race for older horses. Peggotty was sent an exhibition mile and a-half. Lawn Derby Although Lawn Derby's mission at the Auckland Trotting Club's summer meeting will be an attempt to lower his grass track mile record of 2min 3sec, he will start in the Auckland Gup and other events at the carnival. W. J O'Shea states that the horse has done particularly well on the New Zealand trip. Mr E. G, Bridgens, presi-' dent of the club, states that no definite decision has been arrived at on which day Lawn Derby will make the attempt. RECORD CHASING LUCKY JACK AT FORBURY (Special ro Daily Tlmesj CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 17. Lucky Jack, a New Zealand Trotting Cup winner and one of the best pacers in the Dominion, would • have been available for an attempt against time over two miles at the Canterbury Park meeting in the New Year, but the club has found it necessary to turn the offer down as arrangements had .already been made for Indianapolis to make an attempt to lower Lawn Derby's record time of lmin 59 2-ssec for a mile. Mr G. J. Barton has been offered either of the two days on which his horse could make his attempt. and ; as it was thought that two trials, possibly on the same day, would Interfere too much with the programme, Mr W T. Lowe's offer was not accepted. Lucky Jack may now make an attempt on the Forbury Park mile record of 2mir> * *2-ssec, held by TndianaDolisC

NOTES ON THE RACING BIG RACE TO DU MAURIER (Special to Daily Times) • AUCKLAND, Dec. 18. Having his second race over fences. Loombination was made favourite on the win machine for the W. G. Park Hurdles, and he duly won, although he had only a short margin from the little - fancied Gascyne, who paid double figures' for a place. Loombination was handily placed throughout, and. although he ran down the last fence, had too much pace for Gascyne. who apDeared to gain a slight advantage at the final obstacle. Gascyne ran easily his best race. The steeplechaser Pyrenees showed improvement by running a good third, and he should be useful. Hopalong made a creditable showing for fourth. The topweight, Small Boy. who did not look thoroughly ready, indicated that he might not be long in striking form. He might have .been a little closer only for hitting one fence hard. Stansted looked likely at the turn, but he weakened. Shy shaped well in his first attempt over hurdles, but was not suited by the going. Sir Robin Buns Well Favoured with a splendid run On the rails, Little Ruse finished strongly on the rails to win the Kihikihi Handicap at double figures from Sir Robin who displayed brilliant early speed from No. 22 at the barrier. Sir Robin has improved, and he might have won only for hanging out and losing ground at the turn. It was only in the last half-furlong that he was beaten by Little Ruse, who was turned out- in fine condition by J. W. Cathro am. ridden by his apprentice. O. Evans. Miss Clipper, after jumping out well, battled on solidly for third, and Bright Wings was closer in fourth position at the finish than at any other stage. The favourite, Penzance, was, prominent most of the way, but he weakened in the stragiht. Sir Tommy and Torch were prominent at the turn, but failed to run on. Huntingmore was also handy at the straight entrance, but finished without dash. A Two Division Race The Waipa Piatt was run in two divisions, Imperial Eagle (bracketed with Nithmount) winning the first, and Kakarere, who was bracketed with Bronze Step, the second. Imperial Eagle reached the front quickly in the first division, and he stayed on solidly in the straight to win nicely after appearing to be tired at the distance. Bronze Step came home solidly on the outside for second, although he was not doing quite as well as the winner in the last little bit. The form of the others was only moderate, Town Section being over a couple of lengths away third, and Ventre a Terre fourth. It was with a good finishing effort that Kakarere came through on the rails to win the second division from the two-year-old Wapaugh, who went surprisinglv well in nis first start. Wapaugh paid a fine price for a place. Devon, who made a game effort on the outside in the straight, was a close third, and Bronwen, after being clear at the home turn, tired quickly for fourth A Good Performance Relishing the soft track, Du Maurier registered the best peformance of his career in winning the Te Awamutu Cup, for which he was fourth in demand to Valamito, Gay Rose, and Birthday Boy. Du Maurier thoroughly deserved his success, as he made all the pace and ran on very resolutely when the pressure was applied. Cheval de Volee ran his best race since winning the Cornwall Handicap in June, and battled on gamely for second after being handy at the turn. Valamito, always well placed, made a determined effort to head the winner at the distance, but was steadied by his weight at the end. However; he maintained his record for consistency by finishing third. Birthday Boy, always in the leading division, was fourth after losing a little ground. ( at .the turn. * Barrister, who made art;effort on the outside in the straight, was closest of the others. Dictate was about the middle of the field throughout, and finished sixth. None of the others showed any dash. A Big Dividend After being last to leave the barrier in the big field, Nuipapa finished strongly on the rails to win the Hack Cup, and pay over a third of a century on the straight-out machine. The performance was easily, the best that Nuipapa has recorded, but he was fortunate in getting a beautiful run on the rails throughout. Royal Abb, who finished second, was also slow away. Unlike Nuipapa, however, he ran into a good position in.the first half-mile, but had to make his run on the outside of several horses when he challenged in the straight. It was his best effort to date. The top-weight, Balinavar, came home solidly to gain third, and Floodtide's full-sister, Miss Lovelock, showed improvement upon her previous efforts by finishing a very close fourth. The each-way favourite, Full Hand, attempted to lead all the way, but tired quickly after going seven furlongs. Gay Mimic showed up well until reaching the straight, but failed to run on. A Speedy Mare Patiently ridden by H. N. Wiggins, the second fancy, Valdene, finished attractively to win-the Ohaupo Hack Handicap from the little-fancied Romani, who failed only near the end after making a great bid to lead throughout. Valdene has become more solid, and in her present form she may soon win again. Romani displayed improvement and should do still better. British Nation battled gamely for third after being always in the lead ing division. Erlick appeared likeiy when just behind the leaders at the turn, but found his weight a little too much in the straight, and could finish only fourth. The each-way favourite. Haile Boy, became badly placed in the early stages, and after moving up at tie turn could not maintain the effort. Cintrace was prominent to the turn, but faijed to go on. , -'•,.-. , A Surprise Victory • Showing a return to form, Bachelor King brought off a surprise in winning the Flying Handicap at double figures. After beginning well, Bachelor King followed Tonnerre. Te Mono* wai, and Gay Seton into the straight, and ran to the front at the distance to win all out from Te Monowai, who fought on in the gamest possible manner. Bachelor King further emphasised his liking for soft going, and now that he has returned to the winning list he may not be long in scoring again. Farland and RoTlicker made creditable showings behind the placed horses, but the others ran below their best form. A Runaway Win After several disappointing efforts this season, Royal Bachelor gave a taste of his ability when he made a one-horse race of the Paterangi Handicap, for which Jack Tar was an each-way favourite. Royal Bachelor relished the soft going, and gave nothing a chance in the straight, winning with his rider sitting still. Jack Tar came home very gamely from a good way back to get second, but had no chance of reaching the winner Rulette, after being in the first three throughout, was a creditable third, and Little Artist weakened into fourth. Mangukaha and Te Haj did best of the others Royal Bachelor and Rulette returned !!ood prices, the former paving double figures. Jack Tar gave R S Bagbv his third second of the day. the Ellerslie trainer having previously pained the position with Wapaugh and Royal Abb. AUCKLAND REHANDICAPS (Per United Mrebs Association) AUCKLAND. Dec. 18, The following rehandicaps for the first day of the Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting at Ellerslie have been declared:— Christmas. Handicap.—Roya] Bachelor 81b, making 7.10.
