MIDDLEMARCH
! Weather and Rainfall The weather during the month of May was all that could be desired, and in the absence of the usual hard frosts generally experienced during May, pastures still maintain their freshness. Farm conditions are most favourable and stock is doing well, with the exception of lambs on feed which, for some unknown cause, have never done worse. The land is in excellent order for ploughing, but th - area under cultivation becomes less each year. The new method of top-dressing by the use of lorries has become exceedingly popular with farmers, and a large increase in the use of lime is noticeable. The rainfall during the month whs 107 points, which was exactly one-half the fall recorded for the same month last year, but was sufficient for the requirements of the’district. The average rainfall for the month during the past seven years is 150 points, and the rainfall for the five months ended May was 9.52 in. against 13.56 in in 1937. 10.75 in in 1936, and lO.lOin in 1935, The daily rainfall was as follows;—May 6, 8 points; May 7, 6 points; May 10, 5 points; May 15, 15 points; May 20, 7 points; May 26, 18 points; May 27, 16 points; May 29, 32 points —a total of 107 points on eight days.
