Primary Schools Rugby The annual meeting of the Eastern Southland Primary Schools’ Rugby Football Committee was presided over by Mr R. G. Watson, delegates being present from the Gore, East Gore, Convent and Mataura Schools. The annual report was read and adopted. Officers were elected as follows; — President, Mr R. G. Watson; secretary, Mr A. I. Charles; committee, male members of the staffs of the schools competing in the competitions, representatives from the Convent School and a representative from the Eastern Southland Rugby Fotoball Sub-union. The maximum weight for senior players was fixed at 7.7, and for juniors 5.10, the maximum weight for intermediate players to be mutually agreed upon. It was decided that the competitions commence on July 1, the length of halves to be: Seniors, 30 minutes, and juniors 25 minutes. Gore Croquet Club The annual meeting of the Gore Croquet Club was held in the Cosy Tea Rooms, Mrs J. Brown presiding over a large attendance of members. The adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, which revealed a credit of £62 18s 6d, was moved by the chairwoman, who commented favourably on the successful year experienced by the club. Commenting on the season’s activities, Mr R. W. McCreath, president of the Dominion Croquet Council, stated that he had recently made a tour of all clubs in New Zealand, and it was his opinion that the Gore Club stood well to the forefront both in the matter of finances and ground facilities. The club was fortunate in having such beautiful grounds and surroundings at a particularly small rental of £2 a year. The report and balance sheet were adopted. Caverhill; Greens and Selection Committee—Mesdames G. McLeod, R. W. McCreath and A. B. Caverhill: delegate to the Southland Croquet Association, Mrs G. McLeod: auditor, Mr W. D. Shelton. The opening day for the 1938-39 season was left to the incoming committee to fix. A suggestion was raised that a special day be set aside each week for conducting championship matches, no other games to be played on that day.—lt was decided to make the suggestion a recommendation to the incoming committee. Building Permits During the past two months building has been remarkably slack at Gore, and it is some time since permits were taken out in the town for large contracts. In the month of May five permits were issued by the Gore Borough Council for alteration work valued at £4 Is, while in the previous month not one permit was issued. In May, 1937. the value of work was £1266 10s. compared with £6415 in May, 1936. With no permits issued in March this year, the total for the two months of the borough financial year is only £4 Is, compared with £7196 for the same period last year, £8875 in 1936, and £5930 in 1935. Personal Mr P. Amos, whp has been employed for the last '3O years by the Southland Frozen Meat and Produce Export Company, Ltd., at Mataura as a meat, grader, has tendered his resignation from the firm. Mr and Mrs Amos intend to leave shortly for a trip abroad. Rugby Football The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Eastern Southland Rugby Football Sub-union was presided over by Mr J. W. Aitken. The secretary fo the Eastern Southland Referees’ Association wrote advising that it had been suggested that an invitation be extended to a number of Invercargill referees to visit Gore and give a lecture on the rules of the game. Coaches, players, and officials would be invited to the function—lt was resolved that an invitation be extended and that £2 be allotted towards the expenses of the visitors. The following applications for transfers were granted:—F. Lockie, from Christchurch West High School to Wyndham; W. Clarke, from Marist (Invercargill) to Albion. A communication from the Central Sub-union about representative matches, which was previously held over, was dealt with, and it was decided to suggest July 9 as a suitable date for the East-ern-Central junior grade match. There was a brief discussion on the suggestion that the Wyndham Club had fielded a player named Baird on May 7 without having the necessary transfer, and it was decided to write to the Wyndham Club asking for an explanation.
