ST. KILDA BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL I A meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council was held last night, when there were present: The Mayor (Mr J. J. Marlow), and Crs N D. Anderson. G. Glue, W. Lovell, R. S Brent T D. B. Rolfe, J. C. Cherry, J. H. Hinton E, Longworth. H. H. Johnson, and W. Rutherford. CORRESPONDENCE The secretary of the Musselburgh School Committee wrote advising that the committee was prepared to keep the grass plot adjoining the school in Alfred street in good order if the council would level the turf. The committee was considering beautifying the school grounds, and it asked the council if it would give six trees for planting in the grass plot.-The Mayor said that the work of levelling +v >e turf had been commenced. He pointed out that the area was not suitable for treeplanting, and it was decided to advise the committee that the council was not in favour of the proposal and could not give the trees requested. Mr A. G. Justice wrote asking the council to consider widening the roadway at the corner of Bay View road and Forbury road, as it was dangerous to motor traffic—Cr Hinton pointed out that the corner was in the city boundary and stated that he had advised Mr Justice to this effect. He suggested that the attention of the City Council be drawn to the matter, and this course was agreed upon. FINANCE The clerk (Mr J. V. Trezise) reported that the council had a credit bank balance of £3OIO 11s. Receipts during the past period totalled £287 8s 7d, and accounts to be passed for payment amounted to £1459 11s Id.—The report was adopted. FOREMAN’S REPORT The borough foreman (Mr J. C. Clyma) reported on work done during the month, and suggested that in the coming fortnight the patching with roadite of Prince Albert road, Bowen street, Young street, Calder street and Queen's drive be carried out. The report was adopted. PLUMBER’S REPORT The borough plumber (Mr A. N. Shepperd) reported that during the past month he had repaired 20 water bursts and carried out various repair works. The estimated cost of installing a six-inch sewer drain and fittings at, the borough yard in Quarry street was £25. The report was approved, and it was decided that the work in the borough yard be proceeded with. INSPECTOR’S REPORT The borough inspector (Mr F. T. de Largey) reported that for the period ended on May 28 he had issued 199 drivers’ licences, and four heavy traffic licences. Eleven drivers were tested. Owing to the increasing motor traffic in Bay View road, he recommended to the council that the parking of cars be prohibited in this street from Anderson’s Bay road to Chapman street. The report was approved, and several councillors spoke in favour of the inspector’s recommendation regarding the prohibiting of parking in Bay View road. His recommendation was adopted. WATER CONSUMPTION The clerk reported that the water consumption for the month was 6,523,000 gallons at a cost of £224 12s 3d. The consumption for the previous fortnight was £ll4 6s.—The report was noted.
