NEW MAYOR ACCLAIMED

THANKS TO ELECTORS APPLAUSE FOR MR COX REFERENCE TO NEWSPAPERS Apart from a burst of applause when the returning officer (Mr R. A. Johnston) made his appearance, followed by Mr and Mrs Allen and Mr and Mrs Cox. the crowd was silent when the figures for (he Mayoralty were announced. Mr Allen was given a mixed reception when he began to express his thanks to the citizens for electing him Mayor. “To me it is a groat achievement to be elected Mayor of my native citv.” Mr Allen said. “ I thank all those who voted for me and in particular the members of my Election Committee. It will be my constant eff-irt to serve the city and the citizens. Mr Cox and I have had a hard, but very clean, fight.” (Here the crowd interrupted with a chorus of boo’s.) “It has been free from personalities.” he said, and concluded with a further expression of thanks to the citizens, with an accompaniment of applause and boos. “ Press Vilifications ” Mr Cox was well received, the applause being punctuated by a stentorian voice shouting “ Hurrah for Wanganui." There was an appreciable time before he began to speak, and then he expressed his congratulations to Mr and Mrs Allen. “ I assure you that I believe Mr Allen will be a very useful Mayor," Mr Cox said. “ I have sat with him in council and in committees, and I know him as a gentleman. I know that he takes a deep interest in the welfare of the city, and that he will serve it to the best of his ability. 1 have had a very happy term as Mayor. I came into office a .stranger, and I go out of office with thanks that I have been able to serve the city.” There were only two points he wished to discuss, he concluded. “ First, I wish to say that a time will come when bricks and mortar will not have a vot°. and, secondlv. that a time will come when Dunedin will have a press that will not publish the vilifications that have been published against me in thi, - : campaign. Mr Cox then called for three cheers for the new Mayor and for Mrs Allen, and led a very hearty response.
