SOUTH OTAGO
BALCLUTHA
Personal Mr F. G. Hall-Jones, of Invercargill, district governor of Rotary in New Zealand, met a number of those interested in forming a Rotary Club here. He also addressed the local Men's Luncheon Club on the aims and objects of the Rotary movement- He stated that it was particularly desired to form a club in Balclutha in order to form a precedent for similar small towns throughout the Dominion. Hasborough road The Clutha branch of the Farmers' Union is interesting itself in the matter of improving the Hasborough road, between the two bridges, so as to make it safer for motorists. The Balclutha Borough Council sought to have the road exempted from the operation of the 30-mile an hour speed limit, but the Government Transport Department objected to a reduction of speed, and instead, suggested the erection of warning notices. The Farmers' Union is again approaching the Borough Council to have a bad corner at the high bluff where the road runs parallel with the river removed. The union has also conveyed the thanks of its members to the Bruce County Council for its action in removing a sharp corner at the Hermitage and improving the road near the Stirling flood bank.. Adjustment Commission The Otago Mortgagors' Adjustment Commission commenced a sitting here yesterday. The business will probably occupy the commission until the end of the week. Cricket In the South Otago A Grade Competition for the Stewart Shield, Milton is leading with an unbeaten record, and although several games remain t* be played, Milton cannot now be displaced from the premier position. Lawrence is one point ahead in th» B Grade Competition for the Finlayson Cup, with Balclutha and Waiwera coming next. High School, Milton, and Benhar are still in the running, as there are yet six games to be played.
