WANAKA Cricket Wanaka cricket team travelled to Kawera on Saturday and defeated the home team by an innings and 81 runs. The top scorers for Wanaka were F. Jackson 48, Matheson 36, B. Collings 13, Halliday 13. Bowling for Wanaka (first innings), W. Ironside four for eight, D. Trevathan four for six, B. Collings two for five. Extras eight. The top scorers for Hawea were T. Urquhart 15 and Watkins seven. Bowling: C. Harvey four f0r,50, O. Sullivan two for 31, A. Watkins one for 14, R. Williams none for eight, T. Watkins two for 14, I. Urquhart one for 31. Extras six. After the match they will proceed to Queenstown. Rainfall The rainfall for the month of November was .14 inches, as compared with 2.72 inches for the corresponding month last year. Rain fell on two days during the month and on nine days during November, 1936. EASTERN SOUTHLAND Rifle Shooting The Gore Defence Rifle Club held its weekly shoot on the McNab range in fine weather. The bright light and a tricky cross wind, however, made conditions difficult. The shoot was for a Christmas cake presented by Mrs Knibbs and was won by P. R. Mallon, who compiled a total of 95, including a handicap of two points. H. Windle registered a similar total but was counted out. The Mathews' button for the top score off the rifle was won by H. Windle, whese total was 94, while the range prizes were won by P. Hay with a scratch 48 at 500 yards, and by H. Windle with a scratch 47 at 600 yards. Cricket The Eastern Southland interclub cricket competitions were continued on Saturday in fine weather. The outfields were fast and conditions were good. The results were as follows: —A Grade: Playing at the Gore Hostel grounds Gore A 207 (Macara 67, Kerr 37, Barron and Campbell 23; Agnew five for 58) defeated Celtic 67 (Agnew 18; Martin five for 23, Kerr three for 15). At Heriot the combined Heriot-Edie-vale team 161 (Ottrey 54, Garden 49; Barron three for 23) beat Gore B 131 (Barron 36, Anderson 19; Harris four for 11). Mataura 217 for five wickets declared (Leitch 55, Armitage 43, Johnston 42) beat Pukerau 54 (McDonald 14; Maley three for 14, Johnston three for 28). Junior Grade.—At Gore Wyndham 243 (Marshall 42, Thompson 40) defeated High School 81 (Currie 37; Heath five for 26, McKay four for 17). Mataura 268 (English 132, Coster 47) beat Celtic 66 (McDowall 16; Barclay eight for 46). Lawn Tennis The annual lawn tennis representative match between Eastern Southland and Town (Invercargill) was played on the Gore courts in perfect weather. The Town team proved greatly superior to Eastern and won easily by 22 matches, 33 sets, to 2 matches, 7 sets. The only two Eastern ladies to win matches were Miss K. Jopp and Mrs Irvine, who beat Mrs Hanan and Miss Mehaffey in the Doubles 5—7, 6—4, 6—2, after a great tussle. Continuing the Eastern B Grade competition, Anglican No. 1 defeated Gore by 9 sets (104 games) to 7 sets (92 games). Anglican No. 2 had an easy win over St. Patrick's by 11 sets (104 games) to 4 sets (73 games), one set being unplayed.

Obituary The death occurred recently of Mr John McNoe at the residence of his daughter, Mrs W. Kirk, East Gore, at the age of 77 years. Mr McNoe was born at New Abbey. Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, in 1860, and received his education at a parish school and later at the Hutton Hall Academy. On leaving school, he entered the seed and florist trade and worked for a number of years for different firms in

Dumfries and London. Subsequently, he started a business of his own in the former town, but after a few years he emigrated to the Dominion. He voyaged round Cape Horn in the ship Victory and arrived at Dunedin in 1884. Mr McNoe immediately proceeded to Merino Downs, where his brother Samuel was working a farm, and he purchased an adjoining property of 200 acres from the trustees of Mr Thomas Reid. From time to time Mr McNoe increased his farm. Just before the Conical Hills estate was purchased by the Government, he acquired the landslip block comprising 1100 acres, on which he started his sons. After the war, Mr McNoe disposed ol his property and went into retirement at Gore, where he had since lived. He married Miss Elizabeth Murray, of Loch Maben, Scotland, and was predeceased by her 35 years ago. Mr McNoe is survived by three sons and three daughters, one son having been killed at the Great War. LAWRENCE Obituary The death of Mrs Hugh Sutherland, of Lawrence, occurred in the Tuapeka Hospital on November 29. Mrs Sutherland was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Charles McAllister, and was born in Dunedin 68 years ago. During her residence of over 30 years in Lawrence, she was a very active worker at social gatherings in connection with St. Patrick's Church. She is survived by her husband. " Learn to Swim " Week The exceptionally warm weather experienced during the past week contributed largely to the very successful result of the "Learn to Swim" Week, conducted by Mr Swan, of Dunedin, who was ably assisted during the latter part of the campaign by Mr E. C. Isaacs, also of Dunedin. Every afternoon and evening the swimming pool was crowded with young people. CROMWELL Rifle Shooting; The Cromwell and Bannockburn Defence Rifle Club held a practice shoot at 300 and 600 yards on December 4. The results were as follows: —Parcell 44_47_1_92, Webb 47—44—1—92, Jocelyn 40—45—5—90.
