CHRISTMAS APPEAL

EFFORT BY PLACEMENT OFFICE READY RESPONSE BY PUBLIC The effort by the Dunedin* Placement Office to secure; ibr ployed men some extr,a { .work so that they may obtain a 'fety additional comforts for the Christmas holiday season has met with a ready response. Canvassers are endeavouring to enlist the practical support of business men and of the various societies and associations, and it is expected that the :aim of the office will be largely realised within the next fortnight. In a number of cases the suggestion that at. least one day's work should be provided for the men has been far exceeded, and in one instance a business man not only promptly offered to engage six men for a week b(it added that the best man of the s'ik would be given a month's work. iThe Christmas appeal has special reference to those semi-unfitr.men who are capable of performing work of short duration but are not capable of sustained effort over a long period. These men are particularly unfortunate in that it is seldom that they ; .*can be ; assisted through the ordinary channels, of the'!,Placement Office. The pathy of the Maypr has been enlisted and he has: publicly endorsed! the appeal, which will benefit' the employer as well as the worker engaged and will increase the circulation of money during the Christmas season. The essential purpose of the effort —to give this class of unemployed man a chance of earning a few extra shillings at a time when the money will be most appreciated—is one which should make a general appeal.
