CHESS MATCH
OTAGO CLUB DEFEATS .ATHEN/EUM ELLIS TROPHY REGAINED The annual match between the Otago Chess Club and the Dunedin Athenaeum for the trophy presented by Mr Arthur Ellis was played in the club rooms, Capitol Building, on Monday evening. Mr J. J. Marlow (president of the club) welcomed the visitors, and apologised for the absence of Mr Ellis. Play commenced, at 8 o'clock, the arrangement l Being' -that two games .should count at': each board, provided that the "second; was finished by 10 o'clock. The match ended in a win for the club by 7J points to s£, the club thus regaining the trophy which had been held by the Athenaeum for the previous season. Several prominent club members playedt.for the Atheneeum in accordance with the arrangement that where a player was a playing member both.at the.club and the Athenaeum, he should, on this: occcasion, represent the Athenaeum. In making a small presentation to Mrs Beckwith as a token of the club's appreciation of her assisj;tance. Mr Marlow wished Mrs Beckwith every success. In reply, Mrs Beckwith recalled the many enjoyable evenings she had spent at the club.*
