DUNEDIN CHORAL SOCIETY

TO-NIGHT'S CONCERT ::.... In the Town Hall this evening a programme that should appeal to great number of music lovers will be presented by the reorganised Choral Society. It is apeculiar : fact thatat Christmas time musical bodies are inclined to keep to the standard works suitable to the season, without : endeavouring to find works of quite equal beauty that abound in the libraries in the old world. The committee of the Choral Society has gone to a consider-, able amount of trouble to select a few gems that may not be well known, and these, with some betterJknown carols, will be given as, a prelude to a short selection of "The Messiah."" The old French carol, "The Citizens ! of Chartres," is a good example of the bright, cleverly-contributed short pieces, full of movement, joy, and life, while the haunting "All Poor Men and Humble," with its exquisite harmonies, should make it an immediate favourite. Gustav Hoist's ,"Let AH Men Keep Silence," is another fine piece of music that.was most popular when sung by the society some time ago. Solos in the various carols are sung by Jean Harkness, Dorothy Mackay, Hannah Dick, and Grahame McKinlay, and a quartet, is also singing. For "The Messiah/' the soloists are Misses Dorothy Mackay r and Bertha Rawlinson. and Messrs Rowland Dunbar and J. L. Tennent. Miss Mavis Macdonald and Dr y; Ea Gal way will supply the accompaniments on the piano and organ, andthe , concert will be conducted by Mr Alfred > Walmsley. ' "•> ** 'A
