BREACH OF PROMISE
LEGISLATION IN BRITAIN BILL DIRECTED AT REFORM LONDON, Nov. 15. (Received Nov. 16, at 5.5 p.m.) With the object of protecting impulsive males against " golddiggers," who did not suffer damage, Mr W. S. Liddall, M.P., is introducing a Bill directed at reform of breach of promise legislation. He contends that when a girl spends money on a trousseau or relinquishes her employment in expectation of marriage or has been engaged six or seven years she suffers damage if marriage does not eventuate, but when a man suddenly infatuated becomes engaged ir a few weeks and finds soon afterwards it is a mistake and better to part he should be protected against victimisation. It would prevent subsequent divorce and possible trouble to parents on both sides. No steps have been taken to amend the breach of promise legislation since 1879.
