WEEK-END MUSICAL FESTIVAL THE CONCLUDING FUNCTIONS The musical festival organised by the Salvation Army authorities for the purpose of improving the standard of the South Island bands was concluded yesterday,' when a highly successful field day was held at Tahuna Park and a united < musical meeting was conducted in the Fortress last evening. Seven bands and a large gathering of Salvation Army followers were present at Tahuna Park yesterday morning, when, following a short opening service, Lieutenant-com-missioner F. Adams extended a welcome to the bandsmen and comrades, and wished them an enjoyable day. An excellent display of marching and counter-marching by the seven bands was followed with great interest, and the task of the judge—Adjutant Chandler, assistant divisional commissioner, of Christchurch—in separating the competing combinations was a difficult one. Taking into consideration their marching, deportment and playing, he placed the bands as. follows: — A GRADE Dunedin City 1 Christchurch City and Ashburton (equal) .... ...... 2 Invercargill .. .. ..: .. . • 4 B GRADE Dunedin South .. .. ... .. 1 After the marching displays the massed bands, under the leadership of Adjutant Chandler, played the march “Remington” and the hymn “ Onward, Christian Soldiers,” after which they marched past in massed formation. An enjoyable afternoon was spent by the large crowd, which was entertained with selections by the various bands. Commenting on the .field day, Lieutenant-commissioner Adams expressed his gratification at the improvement shown in every feature of the week-end’s festival, compared With that held two years ago.
