AMATEUR CYCLING

OTAGO CENTRE The monthly meeting of the Otago Amateur Cycling Centre was held last Monday. Messrs F. H. Greenfield (president), A. Tate, J. A. Johnston. W. Chalmers, J. Fletcher, W. Laws and G. A. Sinclair were present. A request for permission to hold a 25-Mile Otago Championship, to be conducted on the massed-start principle, was received from the Dunedin Amateur Cycling Club. It was agreed to assist the club in this venture- by giving trophies to the value of £2 2s. It was decided to approve of the dates for the Southland 25-Mile Time Trial Championship on August 14 and the ninth annual GoreInvercargill Race on August 28. The following recommendations for trials prior to the selection of the team for the Empire Games were received from the New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association for the centre's approval. Canterbury Centre to hold the New Zealand Road Championship on October 16 (first road trial). Canterbury to hold the final Road Trial, 100 kilometres, massed start, on October 20. The first track trials to be held by the Auckland Centre under the auspices of the N.Z.A.C.A. on December 4 at Auckland. Canterbury Centre to hold the New Zealand Track Championship t final track trials) on January 8, at Christchurch.

Any rider who is not oresent at both the first and final road or track trials will not be eligible for .selection. After considerable discussion Mr Laws moved that the centre should recommend to the association that, in the event of a rider who had not competed at the first track trial, putting up an outstanding performance at the National Track Championships at Christchurch he should be eligible for selection for the Empire Games. In supporting the motion, Mr Tate drew attention to the hardship involved in having to travel from one end of the country to the other before being eligible .for selection. All other ax-rangements in connection with the trials were approved. It was decided that J. Woodford's application for reinstatement be forwarded to the association with a favourable recommendation. Mr G. A. Sinclair brought up the matter of assisting riders to attend the trials for the Empire Games. Mr Johnson saif* that the centre should make sure that Otago was well represented at these trials, and he moved that assistance be given suitable riders to enable them to compete. The following representatives were elected as selectors: F. H. Greenfield, J. A. Johnson, and J. Fletcher.
