LIFE-SAVING SOCIETY

OTAGO BRANCH MEETING A meeting of the committee of the Otago branch of the Royal Life-saving Society was held last night, and was attended by Messrs H. H. Henderson (in the chair), W. H. Matthews, A. Findlay, D. C. Bannatyne, R. G. Gibbs, E. C. Isaacs, S. Mason. H. L. Longbottom. the Rev. Bro. Ryan, and Miss M. Collett. The secretary of the Auckland branch of the Royal Life-saving Society wro'e stating that at the last meeting of the branch it had been moved that the constitution be altered to allow the annurl meeting of the society to be held at Wellington in place of the annual conference. It was pointed out that the fate of resolutions passed at the conference was the cause of this move on Auckland’s part, and the Auckland branch felt that it was useless going to Wellington and spending hours discussing matters and passing resolutions which were turned down a few months later by the council.—lt was decided to support the resolution. The secretary reported having written to the National Committee of Swimming and Life Saving at Wellington in reply to the circular from the Minister of Internal Affairs regarding the best means of employing the increased leisure of workers. He stressed the uoint that in Dunedin at least the facilities provided ii. (he way of bathing pools were completely inadequate for the needs of the population. An additional bath at the north end of the city and another at the south were urgently needed. It was suggested that a bathing pool should be built at the King’s High School and that the Government should see that the Education Department was provided with funds to enable this to be done. Furthermore, a Government grant to the Dunedin City Council should ensure the erection of another up-to-date tepid bath.—Approved. Attention was drawn to a report that in Auckland competitors for the bronze medallion were asked to perform the releases one after another and then to do the releases.—lt was decided to write to the council if this was the practice and, if so, whether it approved of the method. It was decided to hold the Boys’ Brigade life-saving competition at the Municipal Baths on June 21 and 23. Messrs H. D. Gillies, D. C. Bannatyne. and Miss E. Collett being appointed examiners. The following awards were approved:—Elementary certificate—Mary James, Betty Wragge. Josephine Allan, Doris Kaye, William J. Barnes, Thomas A. H. Dodd, Alan E. Johnson, James E. M‘Coy, William A. Penrose. Neale C. Sutherland: intermediate—William J. Barnes, Alan E. Johnson, James E. M'Coy. William A. Penrose. Neale C. Sutherland.
