MODEL ENGINEERING

SOCIETY'S ANNIVERSARY The Otago Model Engineering Society celebrated the first anniversary of its foundation in the society's clubroom on Saturday night The chairman (Mr L. Boyce) presided. • The chairman made a special plea for all members and others interested to enter models for exhibition at the Winter Show. The display last year had been so successful that an invitation for a further exhibition had been called for. "'•■'■ It was stated that certain members of the society had been in contact with a model engineering enthusiast in Ohio, U.S.A., and had received a report on a petrol-driven model aeroplane. , .' . In regard to the model engineering supplies that the society had on hand, it was stated that oiders had exceeded the demand, and & ballot was held to determine the distribution of the supplies. The chairman ms.de special mention of the fact that a member of the society (Mr C. Angus) had constructed a petrol-driven model aeroplane which had made a flight of 10 minutes duration—a Dominion record. Mr Angus had also constructed a speedboat thai in tests on the harbour had reached a speed of 30 miles an hour, which was considerably in excess of that attained by models elsewhere in New Zealand. The secretary of the society <Mr H. Riddle) proposed the toast of "The Internal Combustion Engine." He- remarked on the success experienced by Mr Angus, and also mentioned that Mr A. T. Scott had constructed a successful four-stroke model. Mr E. P. Cozens replied to the toast. A good deal of rivalry existed between the steam and the internal combustion engine enthusiasts, he said, but a feeling of goodwil was evident, and he hoped it would continue. There was a good deal of pleasure to be derived from the construction of these models, and he hoped that the younger members of the society would concentrate on their construction. The toast of "The Club" was proposed by Mr F. J. O'Grady, who stated that his idea of the club was one of engineering research rather than model engineering. The average member constructed his models in his spare time, and he was convinced that many inventions had seen their beginnings in the activities of model engineering enthusiasts. He had, moreover, a great admiration for the engineering mind.
