CALEDONIAN SOCIETY

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of directors of the Caledonian Society of Otago was held on Monday evening, the president, Mr J. A. Johnston, presiding over a good attendance of membevs. Prior to commencing the general business, the president referred to the loss the society and sport in general had suffered by the death of Mr J. C. Henderson, a director and member for many years. His active interest in the welfare of the society was greatly appreciated by all members, a coincidence of this being the presentation of a handsome silver challenge cup for the interhouse section of the society's sports only a few days before his death. The members joined the president in showing respect to his memory and sympathy with his widow and relatives. Several letters and cards frqm kindred societies throughout the Dominion, Australia, and the Homeland were received conveying good wishes and success for the New Year. The Citizens' Appeal Committee wrote in connection with the effort to secure new uniforms for the Dunedin Highland Pipe Band, and the Pipers and Dancers' Association wrote concerning its activities. Both letters were strongly commended, and referred to the Finance Committee for favourable assistance. The directors considered a recommendation from the Sports and Games Committee to postpone the annual sports gathering from February to Saturday, March 20. and this was approved. The Dunedin Highland Pipe Band advised that it would present a drummajor's display during the afternoon, and the Kaikorai Brass Band would furnish the march past music for the interhouse business firms' competition. Mr A. A. Paape submitted a comprehensive report on the Sports Committee's activity, which showed that all (he preliminary work was well advanced. An enthusiastic meeting with representatives from the business firms in connection with (he interhouse section had been held. Coaches were available for each it required from members of the Amateur Athletic Association, and the grounds were available for ter.ms to practice any evening on which Messrs W. J Bennett and B. M'Kcrnan were supervising. The secretary reported that he had been advised by several of the directors that they intended to present suitable trophies for competition which would augment the ordinary prize list.
