NOTES ON THE RACING

(Special ro Daily Times > NEW PLYMOUTH, Feb. 5. Bazaine made play early in the hurdle race, running out well cleai of his opponents, but he lost so much ground at his fences that he had been collared before half the journey was over. Don Erma then went to the front from Royal Routine, and the former had an easy win, Royal Routine in turn being several lengths ahead of Bazaine, Valroy, and Court Anna. They were a poor lot of hurdlers, but the winner wpn well. Great Hope scored a decisiye win in the Ngamotu Juvenile Handicap. He got out well and after allowing Orate to lead him to the turn he went to the front and beat Orate home comfortably. Wildflower came from four, or five places back for a creditable third, just beating Seaham, and they were clear of and All Happiness. Greenwich went with the leaders early, but quickly compounded. Great Hope won well, but he was not offered very serious opposition, and for a well-backed horse with a reputation Cardsharper shaped very poorly. Wildflower and Seaham were finishing on, and the former should be improved. Seaham made the turn very badly. Interest was lent to the Flying Handicap by the presence of Wotan, and while he was not very seriously considered as a possibility over six furlongs he provided a spectacle of his finishing run to make up a lot ot ground and run third, just behind Oratory, and travelling twice as fast. Oratory, a warm favourite, was ridden’ by her trainer, and did not as usual go to the front, but was ridden in behind. Moatoa made the early pace, but Notium had charge on the turn, and led Oratory into the straight. Oratory never looked like getting the leader, and Wotan flashed up over the final stages to get a creditable third, followed by Supreme Court. Notium, with a 51b allowance, was getting just over two stone from Oratory, and it was too much for the favourite. Notium has improved, and Oratory was not disgraced Wotan gave conclusive evidence of his possibilities and forward condition With the race half over he was conceding the whole field six or seven lengths. In the Moturoa Electric Hack Handicap only three or four had any chance from the start. Eagle’s Eye and Captain Tudor, the pair from H. Gray’s stable, began best and led to the straight from Kentucky Song, with King Koroki heading a strung-out bunch. Captain Tudor ran to the front in the straight and won very easily by a good margin from King Koroki, who finished over Kentucky Song and Eagle’s Eye. The bunch was well back, headed by Glenthawn. The winner, a half-brother to Argument, who was sold to Australia, paid a good price, all the money going on his stablemate. The unlucky runner was King Koroki, who lost valuable ground at the end of a furlong. Martara’s army of backers in the Taranaki Cup had some anxious moments at the finish and until the numbers went up, for Taitoru gave him a very close call. Taitoru began best. One Whetu, Aussie Ra, and Windscreen getting off very poorly. Marlara had run past Taitoru at the end of a furlong, and thereafter made all the running, being attended by Taitoru on the rails. Chief Ranger on the outer and then Kazoor and Spiral. There was no material change in the middle stages beyond One Whetu becoming more prominent, and five fur longs from home Spiral went after the leaders. He had shot his boll, however, on the home turn, where Marlara was still in charge from Taitoru and Chief Ranger, with Hazoor moving up. Once in line, Taitoru challenged Martara, and they had a battle royal

to the post, Martara holding on to win by a very short head. Hazoor was a fair third, with Chief Ranger fourth, then Spiral and One Whetu. Martara had nothing in reserve, but his performance after making the pace was ver> creditable. Taitoru had the run of the race, but was not quite good enpugh. Hazoor ran a good race and was finishing best of all the runners. Chief Ranger was prominent , throughout, but did not run on, nor did Spiral, while One Whetu lest too much grourid at the start to hold any chance. . The Riccarton visitor, Convivial, scored an all-the-way win in the Okato Hack Handicap. The pace was slow early, but improved with five furlongs to go after Maestro had raced up to the front from the rear of the field at various stages. All the others then had a dab at the leader, and Student Prince looked likely, as he was still holding on entering the straight, but he then began to weaken, and Convivial had a fairly comfortable win from Bonny Glow, Earl Colossus, and International, who finished in a bunch. Red Sand, Student Prince, and Corowa were next. Convivial won well. International was the win favourite, but the slow pace early and the sprint home did not suit him.

The Bigot was backed as a certainty in the Taranaki Plate, but, as at Trentham, he went under, in the final stages after leading all the way. Bantry was always within striking distance of The Bigot, and, hard ridden, he got on terms about 50 yards short of the post and then stuck on a trifle the better for a narrow win. Ned Cuttle was a poor third, with Cheval de Voice fourth, and then Mustang and Imposture. The Bigot carried 51b overweight. His turn is due, but his habit of hanging badly does not assist him. Bantry had nothing in reserve to beat him, while the others never looked likely in a fast-run race. Sansfoy, favourite for the concluding event, was ridden with great confidence out in front with Calshot, and, after looking a comfortable winner in the straight, he had to be shaken up to head off Export, who had always been in third berth. Autumn Leaf headed Calshot for third money. Sansfoy could probably have won much more comfortably.
