The first meeting of the recenliyformed Taieri Swimming Club was held in the Coronation Hall on Thursday evening. The following office-bearers were elected:—Patron, Mr L. C. Hazlett; president, Mr W. P. Hartstonge; senior vice-president, Mr A. Steven; secretary, Mr W. N. Muirhead; treasurer, Dr W. J. Boroman; committee—Messrs J. J. Thomson. R. J. Campbell. B. A. Quelch. G. Hendry, and F. C. Smeaton. A number of vice-presidents were also elected. The annual subscription for members was fixed at 5s for seniors and 2s 6d for juniors. The membership gives the right of free admission to the baths.

The president reported on the position to date of the construction of tne public swimming baths. The provisional committee which had been set up to commence the construction had set to work quickly, with the result that the excavation of the swimming pool had now been completed. All the gravel required (approximately 400 yards) was on the site and was being screened. The bending of the iron for the reinforcement of the concrete was now proceeding satisfactorily, and the concrete work should be commenced next week, Mr T. A. Milner had been appointed foreman and he had with him a good gang of relief workers. The Minister of Labpur had consented to relief labour being made available for the job, and this concession had made the work possible. The foreman, carpenter and plasterer were employed full time at award wages. The committee had arranged for a trial bore to be put down on tne site and to install a pump and electric motor for the water supply for the baths. The committee had decided to put in a scum gutter around the wall of the baths to assist in keeping the water pure. The baths would be 100 feet long by 40 feet wide, and of standard depths. The whole work would be heavily reinforced with steel rods, so that a substantial job would result. Two dressing sheds with showers and conveniences would be installed. Sufficient finance would not be available to complete the fencing in the meantime. The whole work was being pushed ahead as quickly as possible and would at the latest be opened early in the new year. Mr E. Fletcher Roberts was the engineer.
