OBITUARY
MR J. H. USSHER The death took place yesterday of Mr John Henry Ussher, aged .57, who was well known in business and sporting circles in Dunedin and in the Gore district. Mr Ussher was a son of Mr D. R. Ussher, who was at one time Public Works Engineer in Dunedin. He was educated at the Kaikorai and Otago Boys’ High Schools and afterwards joined Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., being stationed at Dunedin, Gore, Edendale and Kelso at different times. Some three years ago he resigned from the finr and joined Producers, Ltd., as sales manager. He served during the Great War, leaving New Zealand with the sth Contingent and returning after the Armistice. In his younger days he was a keen playing member of the Roslyn-Wakari Association Football Club and was also well known on the cricket fields. In later years he took up bowling and was a member of the Anderson’s Bay Club. He is survived by his widow and a family of three young children. Dr G. W. H. Ussher, of Timaru, is a brother. MR JOHN R. WATSON The sudden death of Mr John R. Watson, No. 42,064, New Zealand Rifle Brigade, which occurred at his home on the Gladbrook Returned Soldiers’ Settlement, Middlemarch, on Friday of last week, cast a gloom over the district. Following his return from active service Mr Watson took up one of the Gladbrook sections and set out to make a home. Although greatly handicapped by war disabilities he showed a determination that wag most commendable and became a successful farmer. Two years ago, however, he found it necessary to undergo a serious operation, ■ but recovered sufficiently ;o enable him to carry on his farming operations until the eve of his death. By his loving, genial, and uncomplaining disposition Mr Watson made many friends and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. He was not a public man by any means, but he was a true and sincere friend who was always ready to assist those in need. Mr Watson • 'as a native of Ngapara, Oamaru, to where his remains were conveyed on Sunday. The Returned Soldiers’ Association and members of the lodge were fully represented at the funeral. The deceased was 44 years of age, and leaves a widow and two daughters. He is the third returned soldier in the Middlemarch distr't to have died during the past year. MRS MARWOOD JACKSON There passed away in Christchurch on Sunday a very highly respected resident of Alexandra in the person of Mrs Marwood Jackson. Mrs Jackson, who was of a retiring disposition, was < born in Naseby and lived in Alexandra for many years. Since the death other husband a few years ago she had resided with her daughter in Christchurch. The funeral took place in Alexandra on Tuesday, when a large number of people paid their last respects. The funeral services at the house and graveside were conducted by the Rev. W. J. Bevis. MISS FAY WEBB HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 19. The death from peritonitis is announced of Miss Fay Webb. Miss Webb was a former wife of Rudy Vallee.
