ANGLING
POMAHAKA DISAPPOINTING WIND MARS WEEK-END SPORT The south-west wind which prevailed at the week-end was felt particularly strongly in southern districts, and fishing was difficult on most streams. The Pomahaka, which was visited by several parties from Dimedin, was very hard to fish, and results on the whole were disappointing. One Dunedin angler reports that the Pomahaka is carrying a good stock of trout, but he found the fishmg very poor, as the strong wind made it well nigh impossible to keep a fly on the water. Good-sized fish were seen rising, but the best of a catch of 12 was only ■ 2Jlb. All were in excellent order, and those which were hooked provided good sport. The same angler expressed the opinion that if the weather showed any improvement he expected that the fishing on this stream would be good. A report from Kaitangata states that the opening of the season there failed to provide as good sport as last year, the baskets and the fish alike being smaller. Two fishermen secured five trout each, averaging about ljlb, using the worm, and the best catch reported was a 61b specimen in good condition. Lake Mahinerangi is reported to be very high, and fishing conditions are good. An angler secured four trout from ljlb to s|lb, the total weight of the catch being lljlb'. Both-the Waikouaiti and the Shag are reported to have given only poor sport, the weather conditions being against successful angling. One Dunedin sportsman secured three nice trout on the Waikouaiti on Saturday night, one weighing 21b, one 31b and the other 41b, but he failed to meet with the same success on Sunday. There have been no reports of fish caught on the Shag.
