RECHABITES
On September 28 a" banquet and dance were held in the Embassy Salon to celebrate the diamond jubilee of the Hope of Dunedin Tent. C.R. Bro. L. V. Gain filled the dual offices of chairman and M.C., and carried out his duties in a very efficient manner. There was an attendance of 150 members and friends. Bro. A. T. M'lndoe, who has 36 years' continuous office to his credit, proposed the toast of "Our Order and District No. 86," and the reply was made by D.C.R. Bro. F. Davis, of Wellington. The toast of "Hope of Dunedin Tent, No. 20," was proposed by D.S.F.M. Sis. A. R. Gain, who spoke of the tent's fine record in having had three of its members rise to the highest office in New Zealand, that of district chief ruler. Their names, she said, were worthy of mention: Bro. R. Farrant, who, although in his eightieth year, still took an active interest as auditor for the tent; Bro. Alfred Martin, now a prominent Christchurch Rechabite; and the present. D.C.R., Bro. F. Davis. Bro. W. P. Birchall, in his reply to this toast, aroused more than ordinary interest by quotations and comparisons from the minutes of the meetings held 60 years ago. "Kindred Societies" was proposed by Bro. A. H. Walkinshaw, who dwelt on the friendly relations existing between all friendly societies, and in his reply Mr Hunt, president of the United Friendly Societies' Council, heartily endorsed the sentiments expressed by the proposer. The last toast on the list, " Sister Tents," was briefly proposed by Bro. R. N. Watson, and suitably replied to by Bro. A. Johnston, provincial C.R. Interspersed with the toasts were enjoyable items given by Sisters I. Parker and E. Burnard.
