TASMAN AIR SERVICE

CAPTAIN P. G. TAYLOR’S PLANS “ DOMINION OPERATION ” URGED (From Our Own Correspondent) SYDNEY, March 12. Operation of the air service between Australia and New Zealand which, was planned by the late Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and Captain P. G. Taylor , is now being considered by the Commonwealth Government. Discussing the proposed service, Captain Taylor said it wos felt that each dominion should take its just. share in the operation of Empire , mail services to aphieve that Empire,, co-operation which was so vital. " I am now pursuing the plans which - were started by the. .late Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and myself for the operation of the air service to New Zealand,” said Captain Taylor. “ The plans which we have framed for the operation of this service were designed to fit in with the Empire mail services. It is obvious that the future existence and , expansion of the Empire is dependent upon the co-operation between all those countries which constitute it. The air . service to New Zealand operated byy Australians and New Zealanders is in accordance with this principle. “In the matter of Empire air ser- - vices co-operation must he in the form of a world encircling airway in which each dominion takes the part that is necessary for its healthy aerial development. Plans for the Tasman service must be based on its conduct by those countries of the Empire which are immediately concerned —namely, Australia and New Zealand. The rejection by the Australian Government of the plan of • the English company, Imperial Airways, Ltd., to operate our local Empire ser-. vice need not in any .way hold up the . inauguration of tlie service to- New Zedland. It is hoped that negotiations which are now taking place will result in the most efficient plan for the operation of this service, based upon co-opera-tive effort in which all those countries of the Empire concerned will take their part.” v 'V. ■ Captain Taylor considers that the rejection by the Commonwealth Government of the Imperial Airways plan was right, as an Empire air service should be a co-operative effort, with the dpmin- ■ ions playing a part, rather than the monopoly of one company.
