HOUSEMAID’S ROMANCE
MARRIED BY ARCHBISHOP Just after the Archbishop of Canterbury had married one of his housemaids, Miss Jean Gould, to a Bow policeman in old Lambeth Parish Church recently, he met the couple in the vestry. “Well, Jean,” said the primate, patting the bride affectionately on . the shoulder, “I wish you every happiness, and may God bless you both.” The girl smiled and thanked the archbishop for the great honour he had done her. • Miss Gould walked through the historic archway of Lambeth Palace on the arm of her white-bearded father, a gamekeeper from Darlington. She wore a gown of satin beaute cut on classical lines. ■ -■
, Like Mr Arthur Robert Harvey, her policeman bridegroom, she is tall. All the household staff from the palace were there—the cook, the butler, the housemaids, and fihe valet. _ * The churchwardens, with silvercapped wands, escorted the bride ..down the nave, where Dr Lang was waiting. When she had become Mrs Harvey, the archbishop beckoned the couple into the sanctuary, and, in a voice so low that only the couple could hear his words, he spoke to them for about ten minutes. Then he faced the altar, bowed his white head low, and for a few momenta whispered a prayer. # The archbishop wanted to give Jeaiv a cheque for a wedding present, but she told him she would like to have something to keep all her life as a momento of his kindness to her. And so he sent one his servants to buy a clock, which he gave Jean before the wedding. • :i The wedding reception and lunch were held in the old Guard Room of Lambeth Palace. It is this room which the archbishop uses as a banqueting hall. There, under the glittering lights, the health of the housemaid and the policeman was drunk by all the palace servants.
