CLEVER ACTORS
VERSATILITY OF FAMOUS BOYS* CHOIR Gay little soldiers who might have stepped out of a Hans Andersen fairy tale, demure little “girls” with bunched skirts and rather suspiciously large coloured shoes, miniature cavaliers resplendent in swallow-tail coats of petunia, jade, and heliotrope, a middle-aged couple who squabble amicably, and a grandma who wrestles furiously with a shapeless heap of knitting—these are the characters presented with unfailing ingenuity and charm by the clever little Austrians who comprise the Vienna Boys’ Choir in their operettas by Haydn, Mozart, and Schubert. One of these miniature classics is included in each programme, and contrasts admirably with the choir’s sacred motets on the one hand and modern Viennese songs, such as Strauss’s “ Blue Danube,” on the other. Commencing next Saturday evening, the choir will give a season of four nights and three matinees at His Majesty’s Theatre under the J. and N. Tait direction, presenting a complete change of programme nightly. On Saturday, at both performances, Mozart’s charming operetta, “ Reconciliation,” will be the feature of the programme. Throughout the season children will be admitted at half-price to all parts of the theatre, and special arrangements for parties of school children, with teachers, may be made on application at the box office, D.1.C., where plans will be opened on Wednesday morning.
