BOWLING SEASON

CLUBS’ OPENING FUNCTIONS Five clubs affiliated with the Dunedin j' Bowling Centre opened the season on Saturday afternoon under unfavourable weather conditions. Following the heavy rain which fell on Friday the greens were in a sodden condition, preventing play being indulged in. It was there- ! fore found necessary to conduct the opening ceremonies in the pavilions. At the Caversham Club’s pavilion a dual function was performed, as after the opening of the men’s section by the president (Mr A. Melville), the ladies’ i season was declared open by Mrs G. M‘Connell. A feature of the club’s open-,, ing was the presentation to the club of a complete set of jacks by Mr A. Love, | a past-president. The gift was suitably acknowledged by the The , Dunedin Bowling Centre was represented ■ at this function by Mr E. Longworth, and Mrs Adess represented the Otago Ladies’ Bowling Association. The first , r jack was rolled by Mrs M’Connell, and v the first bowl by Mrs Melville. In the unavoidable absence of the pre- ’ sident (Mr J. M. S. Macarthur), .the opening function at the Balmacewen Club’s pav’ilion was performed by Mr H. B. Wilson, who extended a hearty JJ welcome to the visitors and members. The centre was represented by Mr J, ; .1. Read, and the Dominion Bowling Council by Mr W. Connor. Miss Macarthur rolled the first ball. The presi- f dent of the Otago Ladies’ Croquet Association (Mrs Dalgleish) officially opened the ladies’ croquet season. The bowling pavilion was decorated in an attractive stylo by the ladies. There was a large attendance at the v Leith Club’s function, the opening ceremony being performed by the president' (Mr J. Knowles). Among thq visitors - were the Mayor (the Rev. E. T. Cox)/ and Mr H. Rowley , represented the Bowling Centre. No play was indulged in, but an enjoyable entertainment was r provided by Hamburg's Orchestra. The first bowl was rolled by Mrs Knowles. At the Green Island Club’s function j the president (Mr H. Wilter) extended a welcome to visitors and members, and wished the club a pleasant and success- \ ful season. The Outram Club held a very pleasant , function. In declaring the season open, ‘ the president (Mr T. B. Grant) said it * waS unfortunate that the wet weather had interferred with play. He washed the club every success during the season.
