ST. KEVIN'S COLLEGE

NINTH ANNUAL SPORTS The ninth annual sports of the St. Kevin's College were held at the college grounds, Redcastlc, yesterday in unpleasant weather conditions, but, despite this fact, there was a very gratifying attendance of the public, including iWends of the school from other centres and Bishop Why to, of Dunedin. The event was noteworthy in that no fewer than six records were broken during the aiternoon in what may well be described as very unsatisfactory running conditions. Shortly before noon rain commenced to fall, and continued fairly steadily throughout the day. The very fine surroundings were admirably suited to the gathering, and opportunity was taken by those present to inspect the beautiful grounds and buildings at their leisure. The Oamaru Regimental Band, under the leadership of Lieutenant G. M. Whale, was in attendance, and rendered musical selections during the afternoon, which were much appreciated. A very enjoyable afternoon tea was served in the refectory. There were excellent entries in all the events, which were keenly contested, and in the majority of cases the performances were of a high standard. There was not a hitch in the whole sports meeting, the various events being run oft' well up to schedule, so that the final event was completed just before 5 o'clock. In the Senior Championship, B. P. Hoffman gained most points, having secured six firsts. However, as he won this cup last year he could not hold it again this year, and the cup went to I. J. Macdonald, who had the next highest number of points (23). P. J. M'Mullan was next with ]fl, and E. 0. Watson was third with 17 points. In the 220 yards Senior Cup event B. Hoffman beat J. O'Malley's record of 25sec, established in 1928, by doing the distance in 23sec. B. F. Windlc and A. E. Smith ran close for. first place in the Junior Championship, the cup going to Smith with 25 points, two points ahead of Windle. In the Junior Minor Cup section, N. 11. Welsh put up a remarkable performance, and during the afternoon established four new records. He broke the records in the 100, 220, 440 and 75 yards events. J. C. Kearney was the runner-up with 17 points, four behind the winner. The Midget Cup was won by J. P. Fox, with 19 points, P. B. Mills being runnerup. four points behind the winner. Fox ginned first places in 100 yards and broad jump, and also secured three seconds to make him the winner of this cup. P. Mills established a new record in the 220 yards in the Junior Midget section. Results: — SENIOR CUP. 100 Yards.—B. P. Hoffman 1, P. J. Coyne 2, P. J. M'Mullan 3. Time, 10 l-seec. High Jump.—E.
