NAVAL AND MILITARY NOTES

FROM MESS DECK, PARADE GROUND, AND RIFLE RANGE By Bull's-eye. OTAGO DIVISION, R.N.V.R. (N.Z.D.). Commodore to Inspect This evening the' Otago Division, R.N.V.R., will parade at Headquarters at 7.15 and at 7.45 Commodore E. R. Drummond will arrive to carry out an inspection of the unit. Training Aboard H.M.S. Dunedin A party of visual signalling and wireless telegraphy ratings joined H.M.S. Dunedin with complete kit for the purpose of undergoing training aboard. Boat Sailing Boat sailing is now being indulged by the R.N.V.R. lads. Opportunity will be afforded them every Saturday afternoon until further notice. Small-bore Rifle Shooting The following comprised the R.N.V.R. team which competed for the Flagship Trophy against a team from H.M.S. Dunedin last evening:—P.O.'s Simpson, Finlayson, Leading Seamen Briggs, Kerr, Baskett, P.A. Btrryman, Leading Telegraphist Bewley, Signaller Peat, A.B.'s Russell and Peterson. OTAGO REGIMENT. D (S) Company The company paraded last week. No. 13 (M.G.) platoon paraded at the range at 5.30 p.m. and carried out shooting. No. 14 (M.G.) platoon did instruments and stoppages as the evening's work, and the parade finished with rifle exercises. No. 10 (M.) platoon did Vickers machine gun work and mortar work. During the last week or so four recruits have joined No. 14 (M.G.) rlatoon, but still more recruits are needed to bring the unit up to strength. Week-end Bivouac Last week the transport section paraded at Central Battery and put in some useful driving practice. Last evening it overhauled the hmbers preparatory to taking them to Whare Flat. Last year's Labour week-eiyl bivouac proved so beneficial to the regiment that it was decided to go under canvas for the same period this year. The bivouac will be held on the same site, Whare Flat. The folloAving routine order has been issued: — 1. Advance Party.—An advance party as under will proceed to the bivouac by lorry on Saturday morning:—Second-lieu-tenant CD. F. Bowie. R.Q.M.S.; Corporal J. W. Moynihan, N.Z.P.S; Pioneers, employed staff. 2. Transport section will leave Dunedin on Saturday morning and proceed to the bivouac by march route. 3. Train Arrangements.— (a) Dunedin sub-units will parade at the southern entrance to the Dunedin Station at 1.40 p.m. on Saturday, and will travel to Duke's road (Central line) by special train leaving at 2.5 p.m. The R.S.M. will be responsible for the necessary rail warrants (Dunedin-Duke's road single). (b) Port Chalmers Platoon will proceed to Dunedin by the train leaving Port Chalmers at 1.33 p.m. on Saturday, and will join the special train on arrival. Second-lieutenant C. I. C. Scollay will be responsible for the necessary rail warrants (Port Chahners-Dunedin return), and this platoon will be included in the block single warrant Dunedin-Duke's road. (c) Mosgiel Platoon will travel to the bivouac by lorry. Arrangements to be completed by Lieutenant T. C. Williams. 4. Entraining Instructions. —Lieutenant A. B. Gladwin is appointed entraining officer at Dunedin.

THE OTAGO OFFICERS' CLUB. Dunedin's Officers Entertained About 20 officers, representing the various military units in Dunedin, entertained a number of the officers of H.M.S. Dunedin, now in port, at an "at liome" at the Officers' Club rooms on Saturday night. A very bright and enjoyable evening was spent in dancing. The floor was in excellent order, and good music and a sumptuous supper added largely to the enjoyment of the night. The Dunedin's officers present were:—Lieutenant-com-mander J. K. Highton, Commander B. R. Willett. D.S.C., Surgeon-commander A. W. M'Rorie, M. 8., Ch.B., Captain R.M. M." Marchant; Lieutenant-commander E. W. J. Bankes, Paymaster Sub-lieutenant T. P. Gillespie, Gunner F. L. M'Donald, Warrant Engineers A. Hemingway and A. E. Parkes, and Warrant Shipwright H. R. S. Fellow. Among the army representatives were: Colonel and Mrs J. M'Pherson, Colonel and Mrs S. G. Scoular, Major and Mrs Sleigh, Captain and Mrs M. Smith, Captcin and Mrs I. W. Cowie, Captains E. Thomson, E. Clarke and A. Perry, Hon. Lieutenant K. S. Ramsay, Lieutenants C. Wilson, K. Morrison, A. Frame, J. E. Green, Morris, A. Munro. and J. Moodie, Lieutenant and Mrs J. Fahey, and Lieutenant and Mrs R. Greenslade. Altogether between 35 and 49 couples attended what proved to be one of the most successful social functions held at the club rooms for some time. Lecture* Owing to the indisposition of Captain A. W. Greville, who was to have lectured on India to officers to-morrow evening, Major Keith Stewart has kindly consented to change nights, and will speak on " The Far East" in place of Captain Greville. All being well Captain Greville will deliver his lecture on the following Thursday. Both these officers have spent some time in the East. Major Stewart in Ceylon and Captain Greville in India, and should be in a position to offer some very interesting and useful information legarding the conditions in these two countries. MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOTING. D Company's Rifle Club D Company Miniature Rifle Club held another practice last Wednesday evening. In the shoot-off for the runner-up in the Club Championship, Sergeant A. R. Fitchett, with 97, beat Private R. H. King, who scored 95. The highest scores for the evening were as follows: —Sergeant A. R. Fitchett 97—2—80, Corporal R. Hay 77 4—Bo, Corporal W. Didham 77—3—80, Lieutenant E. Walden 70—3—79, Sergeant G. Kaye 76—5—80. Private J. Hay 76—9—80, Private R. H. King 76 4—Bo, Private D. Haig 76—2—78, Private W. Winter 75—10—80, Private C. Naismith 74—2—76, Private R. Burgess 73 —4 —77, Private Simpson 71 —10—SO. In the shoot-off the handicap bullet was won by Private J. Hay. The club is well represented in the Association Individual Championship, having eight men in the final shoot, which will be held to-morrow. The most prominent are:—Private D. Haig 539, Sergeant A. R. Fitchett 538, Private C. Naismith 533, Corporal W. Didham 529, Corporal R. Hay 529, aud Sergeant G. Kaye 520. RIFLE SHOOTING, Colonial Prize Firing • 29/4/72.—At the complimentary ball to the Otago Volunteer representatives on Friday night the ladies' prize to the highest aggregate scorer in the Otago team was presented to Captain Wales by Mrs John Cargill, who accompanied the presentation with some graceful and appropriate remarks, to which Captain Wales suitably responded. The prize is a gold hunting watch, with compensation balance, and jewelled in eight holes. It bears the following inscription:—''Ladies' prize to Captain Wales, winner of the Champion Belt, 1872." The watch was procured from Mr George Young, Princes street, and its value is £26. Dunedin Rifle Club: 28/5/72.—The eleventh match of the club was completed on Saturday. The conditions were:—Seven shots at 200 and 500 yards; Wimbledon targets; standing at 200 and any. position at 500 yards. The shooting was not quite up to' the .
