RED CROSS SOCIETY

The monthly meeting of the Red Cross Society, held yesterday afternoon, was attended by the Rev. V. G. Bryan King (in the chair), Mesdames Stanley Batchelor and Sydney Neill, Misses Rattray and Graham, and Messrs J. G. Jeffery and J. W. Smeaton. A letter was received from the principal of the John M'Glashan College advising that the College Band would be . pleased to give its services at the forthcoming garden fete. —Received with < thanks. A soldier patient wrote expressing grateful appreciation of the society's assistance, and of the interest taken in his ease and the kindness shown to him by the society's representatives.—The letter was received with expressions of appreciation. A letter was received from the Hospital Board thanking the Red Cross for visiting soldiers in hospital, and for bringing gifts. Mr Neil Colquhoun, secretary of the Oamaru Returned Soldiers' Association, wrote regarding a soldier patient who is at present convalescing at Oamaru. His committee was in touch with the Pensions Department regarding the man's immediate future.—Noted with thanks. , An application for some clothing was received from an ex-serviceman.—lt was i resolved that the matter be left to Mrs Neill and Miss Graham with power to • act. Mrs Batchelor mentioned the case of a - returned man who had been long in hospital. The man was, deeply grateful for the interest taken in him by the society, and for the provision made for his comfort. —It was resolved that Mrs Batchelor should continue to give special attention - to this case, and should give any little assistance thought advisable. The committee received a very satisfactory report from Matron Macmillan. During the month one patient had been admitted and none discharged. There were now 19 men receiving treatment at the home. The members of the staff were working loyally and giving of their best in the interests of the patients. In regard to the fete, being _ held on November 2, the Home Committee reported that all necessary arrangement* were well under way. Members of the Commercial Travellers' Club would assist, and the Ladies' Committee would be aug- - mented by a number of enthusiastic friends. The Ladies' Committee would be glad to reeeive donations of cakes.
