NOTES FROM WELLINGTON

GOOD GALLOP BY CUDDLE (Special to Daily Times) WELLINGTON, October 22. As usual there is little or nothing at present on the Trcntham tracks to indicate the fact that an important meeting is only a few clays off. This morning there Were only a few visitors exercising snd the gallops were confined to one or two local stables. The tracks are in splendid order, firm, with a good sole of grass. The weather was cold, overcast, and threatening, with H northerly wind, and while the forecast is unfavourable the tracks could stand a little rain between now and the races. Galloping this morning was done on the trial grass. Cuddle was given a smar.t six furlong gallop with Princess Doreen. The latter was of no use to her, Cuddle finishing well clear in lmin 17sec, the last half ill 52sec. Cuddle has improved with her race at Masterton and she will probably start favourite for the Wellington Handicap. The Hawke's Bay trainers who know her well and saw her at Masterton said they never saw her looking so bright and well. Princess Doreen went badly. Sunee and Arctic King finished together at the end of seven furlongs in lmin 32sec, the last half in 52iscc. Sunee had the outside running but was in receipt of some weight. Both went well, finishing strongly. Arctic King struck himself during the gallop and was bleeding profusely behind afterwards, but it in not likely to be serious unless the leg ill Is. arctic King tailed badly in the Mitchclson Cup, but the reverse way round is considered to be the reason and he was off the course on the home turn. His Auckland display was far from being his right form. Sunee has been running on at the end of Ilia races, except at Otaki, where he was run out. in front. He is a likely light-weigh', to surprise one of these day s in a distance handicap. The two-year-olds had the use of the outside of the course proper and ran down in the following pairs:—Brabant and Eagle's Eye from the five furlongs, _ and Siegmund and Emmeline Girl and Cricket and Deficit from the half-mile. Brabant and Siegmund have improved with their race at Masterton. Other gallops were:—Ayresleigh seven furlongs in lmin 33Jsec, Darecourt an 1 Gate Crasher six in lmin lCJsec, Theistor seven in lmin 37sec, Dampier and Going Gay six in, lmin 17sec, Otauru Kinß six in lmin Boomerang four in SOsec, Dark Eed and Bluebell four in Slsec. Visitors out were Big Dook, Vanestep, Lifeguard, Jewish Lad, Gasman. Pokiha. and Isins, all being restricted to easy work. Big Dook, who rather unexpectedly' started favourite for the Vivian Iliddiford Memorial Cup at Masterton, in which he ran a creditable race, has not done at all well on the trip. The journey from Gisbornc to Masterton was done in two days, and it was too much for him. He has since been right off his feed, but he may pick up now that he is settled at Trcntham. The light-weight horseman R. W. Savage has been engaged for Senior, Bodyline, and Ayresleigh at the Wellington meeting. He will ride Sunee in the New Zealand Cup and Seafox in the Stewards' Handicap.
