RICCARTON TEAM FOR TRENTHAM

(Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, October 22. The first of the Riccarton lot left for Trentham to-night. H. Cutts went with Fracas, Slasher, Wild Chase, and Paper Slipper; T. H. Gillett with Greek Shepherd and Pelmet; and P. V. Mason with Variant and Hoetis. The remainder of the Riccarton trainers, including Mrg J. Campbell, F. D. Jones, F. Christmas, C. M'Carthy, S. Barr, A. S. Ellis, and T. Smith, will go north on Thursday night. All the horses which left to-night are in good order. Wild Chase and Pelmet should run well in the Wellesley Stakes, and Kow Tow and Paper Slipper in the two-year-old handicaps. Greek Shepherd is a three-year-old likely to make a stayer, while Slasher is a promising novice. Mrs J. Campbell has_had an addition to her team, the lioydon"three<ycar-old Colleen Ougtic being brought back from Washdykc on Saturday after a promising performance in the Spring Stakes. She is engaged in the Trial Stakes at llangiora on Monday. The many friends of Mr F. Armstrong, the owner of Friday Night and other horses, will be pleased to learn that he is on the way to good health again after an operation for appendicitis. The following riding engagements have been made for the Wellington Racing Club's meeting:—A. E. Ellis—Vintage, Fracas, and Wild Chase; A. Messervy— Greek Shepherd.' Pelmet, and Silver Sight; L. J. Ellis—Silver Streak, Kinnoull, and Top Coat; A. 0. Messervy, Paper Slipper and Slasher; G. H. Humphries—Spiral, Moquette. Kow Tow, and Bon Tray, also Lady Graceful on the second day; 11. Goldfinch—Cerne Abbas, Fair Weather, and Grey Honour; W. 11. Jones, Argentic. After riding at Trentham on Saturday W. H. Jones will return for the NorthCanterbury meeting, where he will be on Haste Away, Rona Bay, and Owlsglcain. 1). O'Connor will pilot Chidden, Orris, Golden Dart, Tail Light, and Matron at'Rangiora. Rebel Chief, for whom he was also engaged, will not fulfil his engagement. L". J. Ellis has arrived back in good health after his trip to Sydney. He was riding work at Riccarton this morning, and will reappear as a race rider at Trentham on Saturday and Monday. The held which contested the Tycho Hack Handicap at Washdykc on Saturday included the Rapier three-year-old Slasher, who was making his first appearance in a race. He was not prominent in the early part; but was running strongly in the straight to finish fifth. Slasher has attracted a lot of attention since lie commenced work at Rjccarton as a colt likely to make a good performer, and after his eiVort on Saturday he may not need much more experience before he is ready to win. He is engaged at a mile at Trentham on Saturday, and may be seen to considerable advantage. The New Zealand Cup winner, Fast Passage, by The Ace from Sailor's Hope, has a very fine Winning Hit filly (her first foal) running at her side at the Stonvhurst Stud. She is one of five mare's that Sir Charles Clifford will mate with the Paladin horse Rabbi this season.
