« IMPORTANCE OF CHAHAR GATEWAY TO MINERALS , LONDON, June 17. Discussing the importance of Chahar Province, in view of the dispute between China and Japan, The Times, in a special article, points out that the province constitutes the gateway to the vast Shansi coalfield, and rich deposits of iron ore, while there are even richer coalfields in Suiyuan. Both are vital parts of Inner Mongolia, as they include fertile areas. Moreover. Chahar strategically commands Peking. The results of the current events, says the article, probably will produce peace in Eastern Asia, as they must ensure the unification of Mongolia. The Mongols are passively antiRussian, actively anti-Chinese, and fanatically anti-railway. The Japanese would be powerless west of the Khingan Mountains, and, moreover, the Japanese, owing to the climate, would he unable to compete with Mongolian farmers, foresters and miners. I
