NEW PLYMOUTH TRAMWAYS

EXTENSIVE OVERHAUL NECESSARY REPLACING WITH TROLLY BUSES PROPOSED (Per United Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, July 1. A proposal that the New Plymouth tramways should be replaced hy trolly buses was placed before the Borough Council to-night by Cr F. S. Grayling. The scheme was referred to the Tramways Committee for investigation. Tramways were being recognised as uut-of-date all over the world, said Cr Grayling. Though the systpm at New Plymouth had given good service, the streets and tram tracks in the near future would require an extensive and costly overhaul. He thought the time appropriate to consider the installation of trolly buses. Cr Stainton indicated that the cost of the change would be about £50,000. He stated that the change could be made in sections. The proposer of the scheme urged that the change would mean substantial economy.
