THE CATTLE SUBSIDY
PAYMENT IN BRITAIN EXTENSION OF PERIOD (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, June 26. (Received June 27, at 5.5 p.m.) The House of Commons approved the extension by three months of the period during which the cattle subsidy was payable under the Act of 1935. Mr Elliot explained that the purpose of the shortterm extensions was to enable Parliament to keep the position under close review. Meanwhile negotiations for a long-term meat policy were proceeding with representatives of the dominions and Argentine Governments. In these negotiations they had now got down to the realities of the situation, and he was not without hope that a satisfactory agreement would ultimately be reached. Even if such arrangement were arrived at, it could not be put into force at the end of this month, when the subsidy would automatically cease.
