AFRICAN DISPUTE

TENSION IN ADDIS ABABA AN EXODUS OF ITALIANS (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, June 20. The Daily Telegraph's Addis Ababa correspondent says that, owing to the tension there and the possibility of an Italian offensive in July, barely a "dozen Italians remain except those at the Legation. SIGNOR MUSSOLINI'S AIMS ROME, June 26. The right to build roads, railways, bridges and schools in Abyssinia, and to use her influence in civilising it ai\d also the general right of peaceful possession of colonies, are believed to have been Signor Mussolini's uima explained to Captain Eden. Signor Mussolini pointed out that Italy was not prepared to lag behind Germany in claiming colonial expansion. It is understood that Captain Eden did not expound the British proposals, because they were not acceptable to Italy. MORE ITALIAN TROOPS SENT LONDON, June 27. (Received June 27, at 10.30 p.m.) The Daily Telegraph's Rome correspondent says: "The press remains silent upon the conversations with the exception of reports cabled abroad. While everybody hopes that Italian aspirations will be realised peacefully, many believe that war is inevitable. Things have gone so far that nothing short of a military protectorate on Moroccan lines will achieve Italy's ambitions of providing room for her surplus population, freedom to exploit the supposed untold mineral wealth of Abvssinia, control of its foreign policy, and the right to represent the Emperor in Europe. There seems to be no objection to the Emperor remaining on the throne. Italy would suppress slavery and open schools throughout the country. In the meantime the departure of troops continues."
