DAIRY INDUSTRY

! THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION CONTINUATION OF CONFERENCE. (Peb United Press Association) PALMERSTON N., June 27. The • National Dairy Conference was continued to-day, when the following remits were carried: — " That the conference is of the opinion that railage freights on coal are too high, and are adding considerably to the production costr of dairy produce. The Railways Board should be asked favourably to consider a substantial reduction on such freights." "That in view of the importance of boneless beef and veal and the export pork trade as an auxiliary to the dairy industry, the conference impresses upon the Government the desirability of the dairy industry being directly represented on the Meat Board, and urges the Government to bring this into effect." Discussion of remits was interrupted to hear addresses by Dr E. Marsden, director of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, and Mr G. M. Valentine (assistant director of the dairy division). The former dealt with research in relation to the dairy industry, and the latter with matters affecting marketing and also the quality of cheese and butter. The whole of the afternoon was taken up listening to addresses by the association's solicitor, who explained various aspects of the recent relief legislation, and by Mr Walter Nash, who pleaded the cause of guaranteed prices. A remit bearing on this subject will be before the conference to-morrow.
