TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Taieri County Council was held yesterday. Or C; Findlay presided, and Crs W._ Kirk, G. Stevenson, J. Gow, F. G. Bnnsdon, T. Carruthers, J. A. Wither, and W. Nichol were also present. FINANCE. The Finance Committee reported that the receipts for the past four weeks had amounted to £3189 5g 6d and the expenditure to £2334 6s 9d. The bank pass book showed a debit balance of £l9jl I7s Id. —Received. WORKS REPORT. Mr John Garrett (inspector of works) reported as follows for the month ended February 15:— i East Taieri Riding.—Eighty-seven yards of maintenance gravel have been run out from the Silverside dump on Riccarton road. Riverside, Centre, Riccarton, and Gladstone roads have been graded with the power'grader. The men have been engaged during i the month clearing the growth from the old Silverstream bed from Murray’s to Renton’s. Under No. 5 scheme, Gamble’s and Riverside ditches have been cleaned. North Taieri Riding—The following roads have been graded:—Gladstone, Wingatui, Gibson’s to Muir’s, and Centre road. Gladstone, School road, and the Mossburn streets have been surfaced. Kaikorai Riding.—The following roads have been surfaced:—Freeman's, Kaikorai Valley, and Wilson’s. Otokia Riding.—The following roads have been surfaced: —Otokia-Kuri Bush, M'Laren’s Gully, Allanton streets, Rankin’s, and Saddle Hill. Outram Riding.—Some 42 feet of 4ft piping has been put in on Loan road to replace the wooden water opening, and 36 feet of "Oin pipe has been put in on Church road. The running out of the gravel on Bremner’s road to Lee Creek is in progress. Outram to Allanton and Allanton to Berwick roads have been graded with the power grader. Nichol’s, Kirk’s drain, and Bremner's roads have been surfaced. Maungatua Riding.—The tussocks have been cleared from tie road leading from Kawhoi Spur to Post Office Creek, Henley to Berwick, M'Donald’s, Kirk’s drain, Kiverbank, and Otokia-Maungatua roads have been surfaced. The wing fence has" been extended on Dan Miller’s bridge to make it more convenient to get-stock on to the bridge. Deep Stream Riding.—The following roads have been surfaced: —Clark’s to Rock and Pillar, Nichol's Swamp, Romania, Hindoo Railway, John Graham’s, Lamb Hill, and Hindon to Boyd’s. The running out of the schist spalls oo the Pukerangi road to Flamank’s by the Public Works Department has been comB’ 1 1. The men are now engaged on the road. The quarrying of the metal on the Lee Flat road is iu progress. Strath-Taieri Riding.—The following roads have been graded with the power grader:—Sutton township, Lower road from Sutton to Middlemarch, Wade's, Henderson’s, and Mount Rose. Mount Stoker, Sutton to Matarae, Lower road, and Gladbrook settlement roads have been surfaced.

Highways.—No. 2: The section from Mosgiel to West Taieri Church has been graded with the power grader. The section from the Lee Stream to Deep Stream has been graded with the lighthorse grader. Three hundred and seventy-five'yards of maintenance gravel have been run out on the Maungatua Hill section. No. 3: Some 247 yards of maintenance gravel from Milner's pit have been run out on the Duke’e road section, and the hill section has been surfaced. No. 4: General surface work has been carried out. No. 5: The section from Green Island to Brighton has been graded with the power grader twice during the month. Three six-inch pipe culverts have been put in for drainage from Brighton to Pett’s. No. 6: The contractor for contract No, 01 (the running out of 1000 yards of schist metal on the section from the county hut to Waihemo boundary) has made fair pro-

gress during the month. The section from the “ W ” to Middlemarch has been graded with the power grader. The report was adopted. OTHER REPORTS. Mr John Williamson (traffic, building, and sanitary’inspector) reported that five drivers’ licenses, two renewals, one heavy traffic, and two new licenses had been issued. He reported favourably on the slaughter houses. The drainage at one of the piggeries he had inspected was creating a nuisance. The owner had been approached and asked to remove the nuisance, but so far had not rectified it—Received. . The ranger reported having found 14 head of cattle wandering.— Received. CORRESPONDENCE. Revenue vouchers were received as follows: —Highways, £537 13s 8d; subsidy, £1279 10s 2d; goldfields revenue, £1 15s. The secretary of the Otago Hospital Board forwarded a statement of accounts for the year ended March 31, 1934. Received. The district engineer, Public Works Department, wrote stating that the camp for Hummock Runs road for, single men would be closed when the present work in hand had been completed. Ihe enfpneer mentioned that these men would be absorbed on standard public works. Ke°eiThe’ district engineer, Public Works Department, forwarded a form for tentative finance estimates for roads and bridges, 1935-1936. The amount allocated for the roads was £3750, of which the department’s share would be £2500, and for bridges the total estimated cost approximated £39so.—The council approved the schedule, provided suitable arrangements were made. . , . , The district superintendent, Department Of Agriculture, advised that his inspector was attending to the matter of the spread of ragwort in the district, in conjunction with the Outram town Board. —Received. / The Dunedin city engineer asked permission to erect a' hut qn the road m block 111, Dunedin and East Taien district. Attention was required to the approaches to bridges over Deep Stream, on the old Dunstan road. The proposed hut would facilitate work on the Deep Stream pipeline.—The inspector detailed what had been done in these matters, and his action was approved. The Outram Town Board drew attention to the rough state of county roads through the township of Outram—Received. The Fernhill Coal Company, Dunedin, requested that the road in the vicinity of the mine should be improved. In conjunction with the owner of the Fernhill sandpits, the writers offered to provide the top-dressing if the road was first levelled. —The council decided to have the levelling carried out by relief labour. The Assistant Under-secretary of the Public Works Department. Wellington, forwarded information on the exemption of the road adjoining the Shand estate, West Taieri. He asked for advice of the dedication of the land required to widen Kirk's road drain. —It was decided to reply that the council had attended to the matter. GENERAL.

Cr Findlay reported that, in company with the inspector, he had met the Dunedin city engineer (Mr J. 6. Alexander) regarding flooding on the road at Whare Plat. —A decision had been arrived at, placing the works necessary to repair the fault in the control of the City Council, and a half-cost basis.—Approved. DOMAIN BOARDS. The quarterly meetings of the Allanton and Maungatua Domain Boards followed the council meeting.—lt was decided to call for tenders for the erection of a new fence on the Allanton Domain.
