NOTES ON THE RACING i.Special to Dails Times.i ■ PALMERSTON N.,' February 22. After many hours of heavy rain the Woodville Jockey Club decided toi open itq meeting under very unfavourable, conditions. As was only to be expected, the attendance was very limited, ahd the totalieator figures were very poor. The rain ceased early, however, and some capital racing was witnessed. For the Tyro Stakes, Darecourt carried just three times the amount of the second choice, Pukeko. Eka Tere, Even Money, Bazaine, and Wahiuenui all began well, and Even Money, Bazaine, Eka Tere, Viviene, Inveresk, and Darecourt were most prominent as they fought out a keen finish, but Darecourt eventually beat her., rival by a neck. Pukeko also finished, well in third place, with Stroller and Even Money ,-most prominent of the others. Darecourt ran two fine races at Trentham last month, and as she has steadily improved under T. George, it pointed to her wmning. ■ , •• , Royal; Papa was a solid favourite tor the Oringi High-weight Handicap, but ran badly at a slow pace. The early running was carried on by Confiscation from ITetf Sec, Spearshot, and Royal Papa. With half the journey covered Bold Jim' ran through and was almost on terms with Confiscation as they raced into the straight. Over the last haltfurlong Bold Jim challenged, and he got up in the last stride to just beat Confiscation. Boudoir, was two lengths away .and Tres Sec a poor fourth. Bold dim has run prominently in welters during the last few weeke. , Hunting Jay was a pronounced favourite for the-Woodville Handicap, with fair support for Eminent. After delaying, the start for a considerable time, Hunting Jay began well to lead from the barrier, but Red Rufus soon took up the role of pacemaker, and ovei most of the journey was followed by Hunting Jay and Bonnie Vale. At the straight entrance Red Rufus had a useful lead, and this gave him a half-length victory over Hunting Jay. Hunting Jay ran on really well, and may do better over a shorter course to-morrow. The consistent but somewhat unlueKj Alchemic touched a very short price in the Sapling Stakes. He began well to join Surprise Item m the lead, and at tlic end of a couple of furlongs Boomerang also joined issue, the trio named, leading Hunting Scene and Blue Garter into the straight. In a battling finish .Alchemic only just held off Blue Garter, with Hunting Scene right up third, and Surprise Item a good fourth. This race introduced some well-bred youngsters, including Lc Grand (Posterity—Eulogy), Boomerang (Iliad —Graciosa), and Dumb e (Captain Bunsby—Lame Duck), but all_ three require racing. Blue Garter finished wed to-day, but Hunting Scene is the one that may do better, to-morrow. „... Only three contested the Ruahme Handicap, and Souchong was early m the lead.. He was a length clear of the otlici pair, entering the last, furlong, but in a capital finish Navaho got up to beat him by a head. Land Tax was only half a length away. , , .. , State Bank and Lifeguard monopolised the betting on the County Handicap. State Bank, Coronilla, Lifeguard, Blygain, and Queen’s Pride all began 'well, and at. the four-furiong post Coronilla led by two lengths from Lifeguard, with State Bank, Blygain, Queen’s Pride, and Abbey reale following. Coronilla was still in charge racing to the straight, but Lifeguard immediately' challenged, and as this pair were disputing the issue Timorous and Blygain joined in and in a great finish Timorous beat Lifeguard by. a head, with Blygain and Coronilla half heads away. As Timorous came from a long way back there was merit in the win. Lifeguard registered a fine performance. He bored in ” nearing the finish and this affected the chances of Coronilla and State Bank. Bound Score was backed down below evens for the Kumeroa Handicap, for which event King’s Lancer, Werohia, and Grand Blow comprised the leading division over the first six furlongs. Grand Blow then went to the front, but once in line for the judge Tupurangi came along with a nice run to win decisively. Round Score, with a late run, cut out Grand Blow from second place, and Hunting Boy ran on well for fourth. The racing was concluded with the President’s Handicap, and, opposed by a moderate lot, the Douro. Cup winner, Miss

Hushabye, making her first appearance in “ open ” company, scored a very hollow win from Might, who came from last place over the final stages to run second. Prospects for to-day, and the acceptances appear on page 18.
