THE TE AROHA MEETING

(Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, February 22. A good deal of rain has fallen in various parts of the Auckland province in the past fiew days, but at Te Aroha the fall has not been as heavy as in other districts, and unless the weather continues wet the course should be in first-class order for the opening of the Te Aroha Jockey Clubs’ meeting to-morrow. The outlook for the weather last evening was uncertain, but there are hopes that it will clear. The fields are good, and unless the. conditions' are unfavourable the meeting should prove very successful. The win and place system of betting will be in operation, and horses likely to be well.supported include:— 11.50 Ruakaka Hurdles. Record Flight, Emancipation, Ruling King. 12.35—Waitoa Handicap.—Swift Spear, Astarth, Express. 1.20--Juvenile Handicap.—Lady Ruler, Du Barry. 2.s—Herriea Memorial Cup.—Fersen, Caliente, Prince Colossus. 2.ss—Shaftesbury Hack Handicap.— Miss Lorraine, Wahine Rcihi, King Brierly. 3.4o—Waihou Handicap.—Star Artist, Gay Blonde, Scotland. 4.2s—Champion Hack Cup.—Sir Abb, Barn Dance, King Musk. s.lo—Hot Springs Handicap.—Matorni, Baroscope. she three-year-old Kelly promised to start one of the favourites for the Kerries Memorial Cup, but ho bolted about six miles this morning at Te Aroha, and there is now a doubt regarding his chance, as be may not saddle up well after the escapade.

The tracks were in good order for the final gallops at Te Aroha this morning, and 'Some creditable times were recorded for sprints. The fancied Herries Memorial Cup candidate, Kelly, provided a mild sensation by getting out of control and traversing five circuits on the plough, approximately six miles, at half; to three-quarter pace, before he was caught. Ridden by a verv light boy, he went out to do one round, but .the lad could not pull him up, and it was not until the end'of the fifth round that his trainer. F. Gilchrist, managed to seize the bridle. After the escapade Kelly was sweating freely, but he did' not appear to be unduly distressed. Aiguille was a head in front of Aga Khan at the end of six furlongs in Imm 15sec. Pango and Fersen galloped seven furlongs in ,ltnin 30 l-ssec. Pango had an advantage until, nearing the post, when Fersen got up to finish on terms. Half-mile sprints .were performed as follows;—Bonny Gay and Whakapara, fininshing together, in 50 l-ssec, Roya, Secret 51 l-ssec. King Mestor 52sec. Versant 52 4-ssec. King Brierly 54 l-ssec. Triune, Velocipede, and Rona Bay finished in that order, with short heads between them over three furlongs m 35 2-ssec. Our Bonnie ran the same distance in 37 2-ssec.
