WAIKOUAITI COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the Waikouaiti County Council was held at Waikouaiti yesterday, when there were present Crs, E. Laley (chairman), H. Box, A. Douglas, C. T. M'Callum, G. Gilmore, and P. Briscoe. ' FINANCE. Accounts amounting to £llßs Is 9d were passed for payment. CORRESPONDENCE. Vouchers were received from the Treasury for £443 17s Hd, rebate on the 1934-35 rates, and for 5s goldfields revenue. Vouchers were also receive’ from the Public Works Department for £176 16s 3d for subsidies on Main Highway expenditure. . The secretary of the Otago Women’s Club wrote asking for permission to remove tree stumps at Waitati by blasting.—The matter was left to Cr. Briscoe. The secretary of the Otago Education Board wrote asking for permission to form a place for the school bus to turn bn Pigeon Flat road.—Permission was granted subject to the work being carried out to the council’s satisfaction. The sanitary inspector (Mr R. W. Connor) wrote suggesting that sand should be spread over the rubbish tip at Karitane.—The council decided to have the matter attended to, and a motion was passed that legal proceedings would be taken against persons not complying with the regulations concerning the depositing of rubbish. The secretary of the Joint Traffic Inspection Group wrote stating that a meeting of representatives of the local bodies within the group would be held at Palmerston on February 26.—1 t was decided that the clerk should attend the meeting. The Medical Officer of Health (Dr T. M’Kibbin) wrote calling attention to the nuisance caused' by faulty drainage at Karitane. —It was decided to endeavour to rectify the matter. Mr A. Harvie wrote complaining of the work done on the Zigzag road. — Received. REVALUATION OP LANDS. The advisability of having the lands in the county revalued was discussed and it was stated that the last valuation was made in 1918. In view of the altered conditions which now prevailed, it was decided to apply to the Valuergeneral to have a revaluation carried out in time to apply to the rating year 1936-37. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The inspector (Mr T. Lang) reported as follows on the work done in the county during the past month: — Hawksbury Riding.—Water tables have been cleaned out at Flag Swamp and Quarry roads, and Snell’s road has been widened near the bridge. A 36in pipe culvert is now being put in on M'Callum’s road. The stone and timber from the old culvert will be used in repairing other culverts in the locality. About 50 yards of gravel are required to repair this road and Flag Swamp road. Merton Riding.—The grading of the road between Kiatoa and Malloch’s run is nearly finished, and work will be commenced on the road from Kiatoa to Hummock immediately. Parts of Brightling’s and Kenyon’s roads have been surfaced. The footpath on the Main road at Karitane has been gravelled, lupins have been cleared from some of the roads, and some formation work has been done on Grimness street. North-East Valley Riding.—The footpaths on Station and Hall roads have been cleaned, and water tables cleaned out. A bridge and a culvert on Reservoir road, which are in need of repairs, will be attended to immediately. Blucskin Riding.—A groyne and protective wall have been built at the washout on the river above the foot bridge on the Orokonui Home road. Stone < quarried at the side of the road was

used. Walls have been repaired on Lower ’ Harbour road, two culverts repaired, and water tables cleaned out. Metal has been raked in and bliiided on the Port Chalmers-Waitati road, and on Green’s road. Metal has been broken on Jobson’s and White’s roads.

Main Highv ays.—Evansdale-Merton (via Seaeliff) highway: This road was graded and potholes scarified, and 700 yards of screenings have been spread on the road between Evansdale and Puketeraki, at the rate of a yard and a-half per chain. Water tables have been cleaned out on several parts of the road, and the new metal blinded at Puketeraki. Dunedin-Waitati (via Leith Valley) highway: The new metal which was used in widening the road near Waitati has been blinded, and 345 yards of inch and a-half metal have been spread on the road between Waitati and Manson’s road. The metal is now being raked in above Burns’s Creek bridge. The report was adopted.
