MISSION TO LEPERS
MEETINGS IN DUNEDIN During the past week Mr F. C. Perry, New Zealand secretary for the Mission to Lepers, has held a number of encouraging meetings in the Dunedin district. With the use of a series of attractive lantern slides the operations of the mission in various countries were explained. Much interest was manifested in the great work that was going on, and in the wonderful results that the care and treatment of the unfortunate sufferers were producing. Details were given of the methods of treatment, and care and education that were carried out, The inmates took a keen interest in their surroundings. They grew most of their own food, and made attractive gardens. The cheerfulness of being employed in some way was an important adjunct to the treatment. Numerous trades and industries were taught, and many of the young people passed the State examinations with distinction. The lepers were most grateful for what was being done for them and one way of expressing iheir gratitude was by helping in every way possible the other patients wno were suffering to a greater degree. Many of those who became • symptom free ” and could return to their homes, elected to remain in the institution to assist in earing for their less fortunate comrades in affliction.
Amongst the pictures shown was one of “Alma,” in Monkstown, County of Dublin, where the Mission to Lepers was founded 60 years ago. The lecturer expressed thanks to all those who had assisted in arranging the meetings, and spoke appreciatively of ihe valuable services rendered the mission by the local honorary secretary. Miss Dora Wheeler, and her band of other voluntary helpers, and of those who were kindly providing scarves for the lepers.
