MOTOR UNION

MEETING OF SOUTH ISLAND EXECUTIVE The Executive Committee of the ijSouth Island (New Zealand) Motor Union met on Thursday evening. Mr F. W, Johnston (president) occupied the chair. A, letter from the Surveyor-general with regard to the payment of a royalty on the union’s road map was discussed in committee, and it was subsequently reported that the union was dissatisfied with the attitude of the Department of Lands and Survey, and desired to meet the Minister (Mr A. E. Ransom)'‘'and discuss the matter with him.. The Nelson Automobile- 'Association wrote stating that the Nelson city electrical engineer- had recently pointed, out the desirability of some compulsion Upon drivers who damaged electric light poles and wires to report the damage immediately to the proper authority. It was considered that this matter should be included in the motor regulations. It was suggested that the union make an effort to include in the new regulations a provision requiring drivers who damage public or private property to report 'the accident immediately. Cases had been known where power lines, had been left lying in a most dangerous position. The president agreed with the suggestion, but the reference to private property could well be left for future consideration. . It was decided to reply that the union considered that provision should be made under the appropriate statute making it obligatory for the drivers of all vehicles to report any damage done to electrical or telegraphic equipment. It was agreed to hold the .quarterly meeting at Oamaru on December 7. The president reported that information had been received from Auckland stating that the Auckland Automobile Association had agreed to change its name to the Automobile -Association (Auckland) upon receiving notice from the New Zealand Automobile Association agreeing to its dissolution being gazetted.
