THE LATEST REGISTRATIONS MARKED DECREASE IN TWELVE ' MONTHS (Pet United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, August 28. The Unemployment Board’s return reveals an increase (ft 1818 persons receiving assistance from the unemployment fund as at August 4, compared with the previous month. There is, however, a substantial decrease of 10,515 when the present total of 62,451 ia compared with the corresponding total on August 5 of last year. . A largs meeting of citizen* and prominent business people was held here to-night to discus* the Unemployment Board’s refusal to pay standard rates of pav to the unemployed on the work of levelling and improving the Gisborne . aerodrome, at an. estimated cost of £IO,OOO. After the position had been fully outlined by various speakers, the following resolution was passed unanimously:— - . . * “That this meeting of Gisborne citizen* protest* against the attempt* of the Unemployment Board to force unemployed men to work- on the airport on the contract term* and condition* offered, considering the job to be an essential and necessary work. Further, the Government require* airport ground* for defence purposes, which we believe to be part of wax preparation* and cannot in any circumstances be classed a* relief work. We fully support the demands of the unemployed that the airport job be made standard work, and that the men be Employed on full time at standard rates.” The resolution also demanded that the men stood do' vn for , refusing work be reinstated on-the No. 6 scheme.
