STREET DISTURBANCE
CROWD HOSTILE TO POLICE THREE MEN IMPRISONED. (Peb United Pbess Association.) AUCKLAND, May. 21. Four men, including a naval petty officer, appeared in the Police Court today as the sequel to a disturbance in the city on Saturday night. It was stated that a large crowd gathered when the police were trying to make arrests, and was very hostile. Joseph Henry Hayes, aged 24, a labourer, for obstructing the police, was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment; George Edward Porter, aged 24, an engineer and labourer, for assaulting a constable, one month's imprisonment; James M'Ewan, aged 36, a labourer, for inciting the crowd to disorder, 21 days; Daniel Charles Pyke, aged 34, a stoker, was ordered to be handed over to the naval authorities. Strikes cost the United States a loss of £11,000,000 in wages last year.
