AUSTRALIAN ATHLETES

MEETING AT WANGANUI EXCITING FINISHES RECORDED. (Peb United Press Association.) WANGANUI, March 14. The Australian trio of athletes —Metcalfe, Hampson, and Barwick —who are touring the' Dominion, made an appearance at the Cook's Gardens track this evening before an attendance estimated at 3000. The visitors were given an enthusiastic reception, Metcalfe feeing accorded an ovation for his fine effort in the High Jump, in which he cleared Oft 4§in —within Half an inch of his New Zealand record. His sole opponent was the Fijian, Vossalagi, who, in receipt of six inches, cleared sft 6in.

The Broad Jump saw Metcalfe again successful, the Australian recording 21ft Bin, and he also won the Shot Putt with a throw of 36ft 6£in, his nearest opponent, with a handicap of 21in, getting 36ft.

Hampson won the first heat of the 100 Yards from Gillespie, to whom he conceded nine yards, but in the final Gillespie turned the tables, winning by inches in a great finish, with inches only separating the next two men. Hampson started in the final of the 220 Yards Handicap, which he won brilliantly in 22 l-sscc from Strange (Palmerston North). Barwick, the Australian distance runner, caught his field in the Mile Handicap 500 yards from home, and held a five yards lead with half a lap to go, but Collings (65yds) finished full of running to wrest the lead from the visitor 50 yards from the tape and win narrowly. E. Lawrence (Palmerston North) won the Two and Three-mile Cycle events, and finished second in the Mile and third in the Half-mile off scratch. Palmerston defeated Wanganui in the Relay Race.
