SUBSIDISED COMPETITION CONFERENCE IN AUSTRALIA. LONDON, December 12. The Daily Express says that the Hon. Alexander Shaw (chairman of the P. and 0. Company) is going to Australia within a few days to assist the conference to discuss counter-action to the American subsidised competition • between Australia and New Zealand. SIR ROBERT HORNE’S VIEWS. ' LONDON, December 13. (Received Dec. 13, at 10 p.m.) Mr L. S. Amery, addressing the Empire League, said: “We cannot gamble indefinitely with the foundations of the Empire’s existence. The seaways must be protected.” Sir Robert Horne, referring to shipping subsidies, urged that very definite action be taken. He would say to foreign nations when it came to a question of subsidies, “ We have as long a purse as you, and longer. If you are going to continue subsidies we will run your ships off the sea.” THE REPORTS UNFOUNDED. LONDON, December 13. (Received Dec. 14, at 1.40 a.m.) A Sun reporter was informed that the reports that the Hon. Alexander Shaw is going to Australia to participate in the discussions on American subsidised competition are absolutely unfounded. The Hon. ' Alexander Shaw will sail on December 12 to inspect the P. and 0. organisations in India and Australia.
