DEFENCE OF AUSTRALIA
VULNERABILITY STRESSED ARCHBISHOP DUHIG'S VIEWS (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) SYDNEY. September 7. Archbishop Duhig, of P>risbane, who was interviewed, declared that the present population of Australia was able neither to sustain the growing burdm of taxation nor defend the country, th«* vulnerability of which was causing grave concern. The Commonwealth and Japan had certainly shown nothing but friendliness, but no man was justified in leaving his house unprotected because he had friendly neighbours. Th■> paucity of Australia's population was a matter of weakness, aggravated by an unwise immigration policy, which gave no encouragcnynt to people in Britain and Euro'pe to settle here.
