DUNEDIN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

The programme promised for the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra’s next concert, in tlie Concert Chamber of the Town Hall, on Thursday, August 10, is one that should sustain its already high repute, and delight the large circle of patrons who are now regular attendants. M. de Rose is constant as ever to Beethoven, whose Symphony No. 8 (F Major) will be the magnum opus; and it must be conceded that this “ little symphony," ns the composer playfully dubbed it, is the best calculated of all his works to give general pleasure, for it is filled with a spirit of rapturous joy, a genuine paean of gladness. The last is, in particular, a symphonic masterpiece, with its ingenious orchestral effects and unexpected episodes. M. de Rose and the orchestra have previously presented only lighter works, but on this occasion they provide a sustained effort, a tone poem, “ Baltic Impression,” of which it is said that it is full of fire and inventiveness. It is based •on the poem “ Vikingnnihill,” by Hugh Neville (Otago University), which won the Macmillan Brown prize. Acting as a sort of chorus between the movements, Mr Lester F. Moller will recite the verses —an interesting innovation. The orchestra’s other items will be the important orchertral suite “ Otheho ” (Coleridge-Tnylor), and the overture “Lo Carnaval de Venice” (Thomas), The soloists of the evening will be Mr Max Scberek, whose skill as a Chopin interpreter will be fully engaged in the Allegro Maestoso from Concerto Opus 11. No. 1 in E minor, the orchestra accompanying; the we.ll-known basso, Mr E. R. Benton, who will sing “ She Alone Channeth ” (Gounod) and “The Wanderer” (Schubert); and the popular young soprano, Miss Annie White, who will be heard in “ Far Greater in His Lowly State,” from Gounod’s “ Queen of Sheba.”
