OLYMPIC GAMES FUND
NO GRANT FOR NEXT TEAM DECISION ROUNDLY CONDEMNED. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON. July 5. The recent announcement by the New Zealand Olympic Games Council that it would not make a grant towards the cost of sending a Dominion team to the next Olympic Games was roundly condemned by the Management Committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union to-night. The chairman (Mr S. S. Dean) pointed out that the council still had £13,000 of the money which had been raised by the art union, but instead of using the money for the purpose for which it had been subscribed—to send a New Zealand team to the Games —the council had put the sum out on mortgage. The union was interested in the fund and would like to see it expended wisely and well, but locking it up would not benefit present-day athletes. Other members spoke in a similar strain, and the union delegates on the Olympic Games Council, Messrs Kitto and Wylie, were instructed to place the union’s views before the council.
