RUGBY FOOTBALL
NEW ZEALAND UNION STRICTER CONTROL OF GAME (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 5. The Management Committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union to-night decided to issue instructions to referees to be more strict in future in penalising foul play such as illegal tackling, shepherding, and obstruction. The subject was introduced by the chairman (Mr S. S. Dean), who said that 100 many undesirable features were creeping into the game, and a firm stand was necessary. Mr F. Glasgow agreed, remarking that he had scarcely attended a game of late at which he had not seen shepherding and wilful obstruction. Mr H. S. Leith said he thought most of the trouble was due to a lack of discipline by clubs. It had to be admitted that the game was not being played in the true spirit. TWO INTERISLAND MATCHES. A suggestion was received from the Hawke’s Bay Union that two North Island v. South Island matches should be played each year—one to be the regular interisland game and the other confined to players under 23 years of age. Mr Dean said the suggestion was well worthy of consideration, and on his motion it was decided that consideration of the matter be held over until next meeting. GRANTS FOR SCHOOL FOOTBALL. It was decided to make the following grants totalling £750 to foster football m schools:—North Auckland, £3O; Auckland, £2O; Thames Valley, £25; Waikato, £3O; Bay of Plenty, £3O; Taranaki, £25; Wanganui, £3O; Manawatu, £l7 10s; Horowhenua, £l7 10s; East Coast, £25; Poverty Bay, £25; Hawke’s Bay, £25; Bush District, £2O; Wairarapa, £25; Wellington, £2O; Marlborough, £25; Nelson, £25; Golden Bay, £25; Buller, £2O; West Coast, £25; Canterbury. £2O; South Canterbury. £25; Otago, £2O; Southland, £25; King Country, £25; Ashburton, £2O; North Otago, £2O; school tournaments, £80; school books, £25. STANFORD UNIVERSITY TEAM. A letter was received from Mr H. W. Maloney, Stanford University, inquiring whether the union would favour a visit from a Stanford University team in 1934. A sub-committee was set up to go into the question of cost and report to next meeting. HIGH SCHOOLS’ MATCH. At Carisbrook this afternoon the annual match between Waitaki and Otago Boys’ High Schools will be played, and this fixture always produces such a high standard of Rugby, that there is certain to be a big attendance. Waitaki have a good team, both back and forward, and have performed well in their local games, while the Otago team, so far, has an unbeaten record. As a curtain-raiser the second fifteens of these two schools will meet at 1.30.
